How much dihedral and washout are you guys using?
Thanks in advance! |

Dave:
The dihedral is really set already unless you moved the bracket. It's supposed to be 1.2 degrees. I'm not sure about the washout. Jamie stopped by here last year while he was in town and I asked him where to set the one adjustment, and he said just start about the middle of the adjustment bolt and work from there. He said the middle would be close enough not to give any trouble and was a good starting point. As you probably know, the pitch of the prop will have a small effect on the washout.

Thanks, that's the measurement I was looking to confirm. Any values for it in inches difference from wing root to wing tip? |

On the Escapade it was 1/2 inch. Since I ordered the quick build wings for the Highlander, I didn't need that measurement, but when I had them laying on the saw horses, the measurement was exactly 1/2 inch.

Back to the drawing board. Doggonit. That measurement on the washout was wrong. I got to thinking about it after I wrote that post and thought that sounded like too much dihedral. The measurement is actually a half an inch at 1 1/2 inches in from the end of the spar. Wish I knew how to delete that first post.

Roger,
Just go to your errant post in the upper right hand corner, click EDIT, then edit out what you want and go to the bottom of the page and click SUBMIT
Thanks for the info, that's almost no dihedral at all. I wonder how important it even is. |

After flying ultralights with loads of dihedral it is hard to look at my Escapade and see almost none. If you look at most general aviation planes they don't have much at all either. So therefore, I would think it is not needed.
Anyone have the technical knowledge to give us the 101 course on how dihedral effects flight characteristics?

To revive an older thread...
I have looked at my wings to see the
washout, & I don't see any. I bought the
Highlander quick build wings. Can you guys,
or ladies, see any washout? The manual says
there should be 1-1/2" of twist. I hope the
factory has decied it's not needed, because I
have none.
Thoughts please.

Mine has no washout either so I called Troy and he stated they had to have washout because it was built into the wing jig. The funny thing was that as I was talking to him on the phone he checked one of his planes under contruction and found out that it had much less washout then he expected, I chuckled :-). The last I heard he was going to check into it. Troy also stated that some of his customers has request he take out the washout in their kits. I also checked with Cornell Aeroworks and most of the 10-15 Highlanders they've built had zero washout and they haven't noticed any difference in the flying characteristics compared to those with washout. So at this time I'm not too worried about it.

How are you checking for the washour?
By looking down either spar you won't see anything but by laying the wings on 2 sawhorses (level ground) you should see one corner doesn't quite touch by an inch or two at most. I helped build mine so I saw the spacer but without realizing how it was "built in", I would have thought it was non existent and my wings were built defective. |

| Put a level gauge (with degree readings) on the horizontal support above the door and take the degree reading, then do the same on the wingtip using a level from the leading edge wing spar to the trailing edge. the difference will be your washout. |

I just looked down the rear edge of the ribs, my wings are
not covered...
If there was any washout, you would be able to see there...
Troy's response is interesting...

FWIW when I had my wings on the saw horses and leveled I had about an inch. Didn't measure it or worry about it because it was supposed to be covered by the factory.
And happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
