I know I've seen pictures somewhere, but can't seem to find them now. I am getting ready to put in the I-beams and cannot find a description of cutting the 'V' shaped relief in each end. How far, etc?

Kevin,
I don't recall exactly, but I think the cuts were just 1 1/2" in from the end. They just were a "v" cut in from the end, Inside the top and bottom surface, just to let the end be a shade smaller. Probably not even needed, but I do recall that I did it. Key is to have the inside of the spar clean, and the I beam clean and no burrs on the end or anywhere along the length of the outside surfaces.
You go man. As soon as the wings are done and it is covered and painted, you are almost done.

That is kind of my recollection as well. One of the guys at the factory said something about the V-notch allowing the ends of the I-beam to flex a little and relieve stress on the sharp corners of the i-beam should it really flex. Don't know if it is true, but it sounds good to me.
Tip braces and gussets today. Going to flip the wing over tonight. More clecos should arrive tomorrow. etc. etc. Really getting to know my ups man.

Hey Kevin,
1 1/2"-2" V's sounds about right. We also used a little grease on the top and bottom of the I-beam to help maneuver it better. If you have a big freezer I think I heard somebody say they put theirs in one to get it to contract to a smaller size to install it.
Also, for turning it when it is inside of the spar, we took a piece of wood and cut V's into it and then used it to make sure it lined up with the proper holes for the wing strut attach bracket.
Hope the building is going well,
Justin |

For the record...
I talked to Troy this morning. The 'v' notch relief:
2.5-3 inches in from the end, centered
drill 3/16" hole
cut through web to the hole in a 'v' shape (I went from 1/4" point on each side of the web).
polish everything well
All that is done, I'll post a picture later.
FWIW
