Midwest Corvair Night Schools 2005

Post by Sean_Caranna »

Copied with the permission of William Wynne.

From February 10 to 23, 2005, Gus, Grace and I will be making a multi-stop, whirlwind tour of the Midwest. The purpose of this trip is to deliver a number of engines which we completed for builders in the past month, and use the opportunity to meet with small groups of builders for a few hours at each of these locations. While we've had eight full blown Corvair Colleges to date, we'll be referring to the current events as Night Schools.

Night Schools will be timed so that working builders will have a chance to leave work and drive to the Night School location. This will give us an in person chance to discuss installation questions, rebuilding practices, and of course, inspect builders' cores and progress. Although cargo space is limited, we will be bringing a number of expensive-to-ship items like Nosebowls and Motor Mounts. We'll have the computer and cell phone with us to stay in touch with our other builders during the trip. Although the other half of the hangar gang will remain in Florida to continue our in depth preparations for Sun 'N Fun and keep up with the regular production of parts, they'll be concentrating on work, so we request that builders planning on a hangar visit come on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday after we return from the trip.

Grace will update our Web site from the road so everyone will be able to read Open E-mail and watch the progress of the Night Schools. Check back at this Web page for possible additions to the Corvair Night School schedule.

This trip is further evidence of our commitment to directly help Corvair engine builders. We have to be the only aircraft engine shop in the World that has a policy of making free house calls. If anyone ever asks you why you chose a Corvair, you can add "because William and his crew make housecalls" to your long list of reasons.

After this tour, our next event will be a weeklong stay at Sun 'N Fun, Lakeland, Fla., in April. We have no immediate plans for another College before June, so I'd encourage anyone in the area of our travels to take advantage of this opportunity for personal, one-on-one exchange of information. Keeping your building momentum up is the best way to get the most out of 2005, your year in aviation.

6-9 p.m. Saturday, February 12: Alliance, Ohio

This is Barber Airport/EAA Chapter 82, the setting for Corvair College #7 in June 2004. Kip Gardner, Chapter 82 President, will be our host from 6 to 9 p.m. They have a very nice heated clubhouse, and we'll be glad to answer any questions people have and meet builders there. If you've never been there, Barber Airport is operated by Forrest Barber, and is one of the finest grassroots airports in the central part of the U.S. You owe it to yourself to come out and make some new friends here. For more information, contact Kip Gardner at kipandbeth@earthlink.net

7-9:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14: West Bloomfield, Michigan

Feb. 14, Valentine's Day, will find us at the facilities of Dr. Gary Ray in West Bloomfield, Mich. Dr. Ray is a 601 builder in the final stages of his airplane's construction process. We'll be delivering his completed, test run engine and mounting it on the front end of his aircraft. It will be an excellent in person example of one of our standard installations. Dr. Ray has generously agreed to open his shop to builders who'd like to spend a few hours learning and meeting new friends. Anyone interested in attending this 7-9:30 p.m. event should contact Dr. Ray for directions at davgray@sbcglobal.net

7-9:30 p.m. Thursday, February 17: Oskaloosa, Iowa

The evening of Feb. 17, we'll be at Steve Mineart's place in Oskaloosa, Iowa. We'll be dropping off Steve's completed and test run Corvair engine for his 601 project. Steve has graciously agreed to act as Night School host for any interested builders in his area. We will be there from 7-9:30 p.m. This will be the first time we'll be conducting any type of seminar in Iowa, and we're looking forward to meeting face to face with builders we haven't yet met in person. For more information and directions, please contact Steve at smineart@kdsi.net

7-9 p.m. Friday, February 18: St. Louis, Missouri

At St. Louis, we'll be stopping by to check on the progress of Vince Kantor and Louis Olsen. They are 601 builders who are on a fast track to completing their airplane this year. They built their engine at Corvair College #8. We will be at their hangar from 7 to 9 p.m. I've been told it does not have heat, so dress warmly. These guys are very experienced professional pilots, and have a very productive, get-it-done attitude. Good guys to know if the St. Louis area is your home base. Directions are available at the Corvair Night School Link at the bottom of Vince and Louis' www.n601lv.com Web page. Contact Louis at Louis@N601LV.com for more information.

4-6 p.m. Saturday, February 19: Casey, Illinois

We will be stopping by Cleone Markwell's hangar to install his Corvair engine on the front end of his formerly Rotax powered Zenair 601 HD. If you'd like to get a look at this, you can contact us by e-mail or on my cell phone. We will also update this Web page Feb. 17 with directions on how to find the hangar. Although Cleone is our host on this, we'll be operating as the contact point for this stop.

If you live near any of these areas, avail yourself of the opportunity to come out and learn something, pick up some enthusiasm, and meet some new friends. It's still early in the year, and there's plenty of time to make great progress on your goals in aviation this year. This is a great chance to jump start this year and set the pace in high gear.

Thank you.
William
