Light Streamline Lift Struts

Post by planecrazzzy »

.
I saw these plastic sleeve material before ...but made my own out of aluminum ...Used them 10-12 yrs
Then in 2018 , I started pulling off weight where I could ...Those homemade lift struts were a little heavy .
I flew without them , but the wobble was still there sometimes , I decided to use those sleeves I had seen before .
Crap... I couldn't find them , nobody was any help ...
FINALLY , I came across them ... I'm talking days it took to do this .

.
They weren't cheap ... but they are light and I have enough left over to sleeve the landing gear also .
.
I got the sleeve in position before I did a lot of drilling , they turned out nice .
.
I bought the small size...good snug fit.

more pictures of the process.
.
Notice the lower bolts slide into the lift struts , They only are held by the upper ones .
Because they are HIDDEN from view , I added cotter pins to all the lower sets .
This was already done when I put aluminum lift struts on it.
.
I did some testing where the tube would sit in the sleeve , I made pencil marks .
One tube needed twisting to seat right .

.. I used some WD-40...
couple clamps to open the sleeve a little was helpful
.
Did I mention they are LIGHT...
.
I was going to experiment with a spiral string / rope around the lift strut to wash away the oscillation effect .
But these sleeves are a clean fix.
