Prop & Avionics Questions

Post by Johnny C! »

Hey!,
I bought a 912, so for those of you who have those,
please tell me what prop you're flying with. And if
you would buy something else if you could.

Also,
I have wanted to keep my avionics simple with a
single efis panel & radio. I have been looking at
the Enigma, so chime in if you have one of those.
And I'm open to suggestions from anyone else.

My minimum requirement is that I want a
built in GPS so that I can have forward
looking terrain viewing.

Thanks guys! Getting closer, fast!

John
There are many things that happen really fast when you are
flying an airplane. There is no sense in rushing any of the others.

I would much rather be looking down at the runway, than up at it.

We have the Enigma and so far so good but we haven't flown. Engine instruments and such all fine so far on run-ups . I understand they have a new model with excellent forward looking GPS. I'd wait til the last minute before buying anything.

We use the 912 and use an ivoprop "medium" So far the prop has been a good prop and is VERY easy to ground adjust and takes less than 10 minutes including removing the spinner.

If I could change it I would go with what taildrgfun is using which is the inflight electric adjustable. We did not go that route because my father and I fly the plane and he is a sport pilot and adding the prop would no longer make it sport pilot eligible.

As for the enigma we use the stratomaster enigma as well as a panel. I researched this subject very heavily and although there were many panels that I liked better there were NONE that offered the same features for the price. The gps is very basic and not entirely user friendly but still not a bad unit and very good for simple flying withought many waypoints. The engine instruments are nice as well although the oil pressure seems to bounce plus or minus 10psi or so reguarly. This could be the unit or the sender, we are not sure. The display is nice and I have not had any problems seeing it any in any lighting as of yet. It takes a while to get used to and the manual is incomplete but if you own a highlander you will be very acquainted with an incomplete manual. I would probably consider the dynon unit as it looks very easy to use from what I have seen and is well established although once you add a dash mount GPS you will have spent a considerable amount more than the enigma.

Overall I would say the enigma is a good unit although not perfect but for the money I have not seen anything on the market that can complete as an entire package.

I talked with Dynon last night & was surprised to
learn that their complete package with 7" screen
is about the same price as the Enigma. $4200.00
I expected the Dynon to be a lot less. I reallly
want the terrain viewing just on the outside chance
that I found myself in IMC accidently. For the same
money, I'll go with the Enigma. Their new radios that
are coming to market soon will take freq's directly
from the Efis/gps with the press of a button, so I
guess I'll get at least one of those, as well ($900).

I'll check pricing on the in flight adjustable. too

Any additional input will be appreciated.

Thanks!
