Putting a face with the name
After 6 months or so of trying to coordinate schedules, I finally had a chance to get with Forum member Kevin Thorp (a Cessna 150 pilot, with a yen to build and fly his own Highlander) . On Saturday morning I made the short 50 minute flight up to the Charleston area, and Holly Hill’s grass strip. Since actual weather was nothing like the forecast or even the latest terminal reports, I had to make the 82 mile trip VFR on top @ 2500 feet...something that I have not done since my IFR days. Luckily the destination field had enough holes for a letdown, which kept me from having to head to Summerville airport, some 15 miles to the east, where sky conditions were still scattered. After a nice breakfast, where we talked airplanes, we took a short 20 minute flight up to Lake Marion before returning to 5J5 and some more flying talk. By the I started back at 1:00 PM the overcast had lifted enough to allow VFR just below the cloud deck. While it is always enjoyable flying my Highlander, it is especially so when I have the opportunity to meet with other pilots who share our common interest. And, as an added bonus, I have finally gotten my CHT’s under control...at least on the enroute portion of my flights. But I still have some work to do in trying to shave about 20 degrees off of my oil temperature

Hot! You think that's HOT!!
Gary- Those are our temperatures almost every day here in the South. So maybe my 225-235 deg. oil temperatures are not that bad. My mechanic would like me to relocate the oil cooler to the more conventional site, mounted at the front of the cowl. However I am really satisfied with my current clean smooth look and would like to keep that as a last alternative. Just how much did you open the under portion of the cowl. I remember you stating that you cut away a lot of fiberglas.

Thanks again Frank, for flying up & giving me a ride in your pretty red Highlander. I noticed Dale (a local Sonex pilot) made a special trip to airport to come see it, and had many compliments about the design & workmanship. I wonder if there's a Highlander in his future?

There are many things that happen really fast when you are
flying an airplane. There is no sense in rushing any of the others.
I would much rather be looking down at the runway, than up at it.
