Hey everyone,

I was visiting with Billy at Sun n Fun and we are talking about having a Backcountry Safety Course just before the Fly-in this year. It will run 3 days, Sun-Tues. and will include 8 hours of ground school and 4 hours of flight training and some supervised solo practice. The focus will be on advanced skills, like landing environment evaluation, hazard management, mountain flying, survival equipment and performance. We may do a fly out camping trip for graduates interested in doing so. Depending on the the number of interest pilots the price will vary. We want to keep the cost at $550 and have 4-6 pilots. I will try to post more details, but want to find out if there is interest before spending lots of hours writing the ground school and flight lessons so speak up if you have interest. Even if you can't commit to this year, we want to hear from you. Thanks

Lynn

Hi Lynn,

That sounds like a good idea. I would have to request permission from my events coordinator, but I would love to join in. I live in central IL, so "back country" is relative. I have nearly unlimited choices for landing options, and would love to learn real techniques and experience about actual back country flying.
Best,

Hi Lynn! Good to hear from you. Depending on my work schedule I would be interested also. Looking forward to the get together. I had to miss it last year...

Lynn, This sounds like a DGI (Da##n Good Idea).
I'm interested, -assuming CA and I make it back from the "bush" ;-)

Sorry I missed you guys at SNF, but I carried on in your 'tradition'----

Ok,

With only 3 people interested, we may be shy of our goal to have this event. I guess I need to be more specific....

This will be a 3 day event August 23-25, to include;

10+ hours of Ground school (Lynn Gardner CFI)

4.5 hours of duel Flight Training (Billy or Vic) in your aircraft +3 hours ground (brief/ debriefing)

4.5 hours of supervised practice (Lynn Gardner as observer/coach)

That is 22 hours of training in 3 days for $25/hour

$550 per person

And to sweeten the deal, I will be cooking a feast the first night. My world famous Ribs w/ potato salad/ baked bean (and salad for those of us wanting to watch our carbs)

I would like reservations before July 1st, thanks

Starting to look at planning for this year's Fly-in. Since I'm building, I'll be driving over for the day..... which day should I plan for? What's the preferred hotel?

Not much activity on this thread for a while. I'm assuming the fly-in is still happening this weekend?

It will be weather permitting for me, for sure.

What is the prognostication for that area
this weekend?

John
There are many things that happen really fast when you are
flying an airplane. There is no sense in rushing any of the others.

I would much rather be looking down at the runway, than up at it.

I was thinking that Billy might have a little
more insight into the local weather patterns.

Sorry but I can't make it this year. Dang...wanted to win ALL the awards this year too.
Wife planned a BIG family camping trip so that is where I will be. Hope the weather is good for everyone coming in. Right now they are predicting some rain. Some can be heavy.

I am currently at brasstown and the weather is good and they have been forcastiog rain most days but it has never rained.
The Murphy forcast has 50 percent late in the day on sat and Sunday.but they keep moving it back with each forcast. It time to get in your aircraft and plan your arrival after 10 am.
