overcharged phosphate cells would rupture and smoke, small amount of electrolyte could catch fire, similar to any flammable liquid.
has never happened as regulator shuts down on failure. I dont see a scenario of alternator putting out 20V or so PLUS the pilot not noticing it from the instruments going crazy.PLUS not noticing the voltage display on panel AND is asleep flying.....
A battery disconnect switch can be installed too to take it offline.

You can see the copper plates i connect the cells with in my see-thru batteries.
