The HSF 2019 was a blast! My Yamaha EPeX powered Highlander was super fast. I set quick time and won several races but came up a little short in the end finishing 2nd behind Toby Ashley in his hot rod Carbon Cub. I made a very big mistake catching my sleeve on my hydraulic flap release lever and accidentally dumped my flaps way early which totally screwed up my landing. Thats racing. I can hardly stand the wait for the next Stol Drag race!

It was cool having so many other Just Aircraft with some of the coolest pilots at this event!!

I’ve been trying out Carbon Concepts leading edge slats on both of my Highlanders and I’m very impressed with them.

I’ve almost called you about 3 times since you mentioned the slats a few weeks ago. I sure would like to see some STOL footage of these. Especially with the boosted apex. How many seconds would you guess that it takes to climb to 500ft. I know you’re doing like a 100mph after just a few, 500ft must come pretty quick?

I don’t think the slats matter much at all for takeoff or climbing. Where they really shine is slow flight and landing.
I have another set of slats ordered so that I can have them on both of my Highlanders. I have my mounting brackets already built for Yeehaw 6 and I have the first set of slats mounted on Yeehaw 7.

Randy is a great guy and makes a great product!

His skis are the best you can get.

Have seen quite a few cubs up here with his slats, they definitely increase slow speed performance.
But a few of the cub guys said they saw a slight increase in takeoff roll with the slats, and loss of cruise speed. More drag.
But the landing speed and added safety margin was worth it.

It makes sense to me that they dont become effective until over 15* AOA - which is hard to do on the ground.

Today with about 8 miles an hour headwind I was landing both of my Highlanders in 50 to 60 feet. I have slats on both of them now. In Yeehaw 7 with the turbo Yamaha I was taking off in 40 to 45 feet and and in Yeehaw 6 with the stock Yamaha I was taking off in about 80 feet. No nitrous.
My plan is to have a new turbo Yamaha in Yeehaw 6 hopefully within the next couple months.

I’m planning to compete in the stol competition in Gainesville Texas March 14 and then head over to Florida for Sun and Fun where we are going to do stol competition 4 days and also a stol drag race demo. I’ve been to Sun and Fun quite a few times but I’ve never had my own airplane down there before just because it’s so far away and the weather can be so unpredictable between Idaho in Florida that time of year.

I’m buying an enclosed trailer from Mark Sorenson and I will be driving on this trip, that will be really different!
