Who did you get insurance with?

Post by Johnny C! »

For those of you flying, what are my options?

Thanks!

John
There are many things that happen really fast when you are
flying an airplane. There is no sense in rushing any of the others.

I would much rather be looking down at the runway, than up at it.

While not flying, my project is insured with Avemco, and I have talked to them about flight insurance. Have not shopped around yet, but I was a little surprised by how much hull coverage for in-flight (takeoff to landing, not including taxi) and on ground coverage would be. I think it was close to $2000 per year, but they recommended I get that then when I was more comfortable in the airplane drop it to ground only (taxi, parked, everything up to takeoff and after landing). I think it then came down to about $1200/year. I will shop around more when the time comes.

For reference, they said I was in their "lowest bracket" and without dropping coverage it doesn't get any cheaper.

John,
The insurance on my RV7A started out at $1,400, 7 years later it is $975 with Nation Air

IFR rated, over 3,000 hours
Hull value $85,000
No deductible for in-flight or ground.
I don't have the policy with me but the liability and medical limits are fairly high.

Now the bad news. I have virtually zero time in tailwheels. I asked them for a ball park on the Highlander last Spring. It came back at $1,800 for $70,000 hull and same limits as the RV. She said it would come down as I accumulate hours but will never be as low as a nose wheel plane.

I was at the factory Saturday finishing off
the last of my punch lists, so the day is
growing imminent. Adam or Jack
said they thought that only Falcon
Air would insure us, so I will check
into that.

Thanks for the responses.

Just out of curiosity, do you know what it would have been if it was an RV7 instead?

For reference on my post above, I have an ATP and over 7,000, about 650tw.

I don't have the comparison on the RV7 vs RV7A. In general they told me tailwheels are 20% higher with comparable hours.
