Granted it’s been about 8 years since I’ve owned a motorcycle, but I had received a quote from progressive, then called USAA who just had a partnership with progressive but promised that resulted in a discount. When I got the “USAA-Progressive” quote it was HIGHER than just going to progressive directly. I’ve had great experiences with USAA, but that one kind of irritated me.

You guys should get the best experienced pilot to flight test your plane. If I remember correctly, Insurance Companies didn't cover you until the first 10 full stop landings. That was a long time ago. I may be wrong or it changed.

Just got a quote from Avemco, $1800 for ground and flight $1M liability. Require 2 hours in type with CFI (going to billy Payne’s sometime soon). No future reductions as they have me lined up for everything. Extra time in highlanders will not affect it.

ATP discount, high flight time discount, and something about ongoing training through work (which is nothing like a Highlander)

Quick update: because I have a one-off engine combination (only Highlander with this engine) Avemco will NOT give me hull insurance until I have 100 hours on the airplane. They won’t even give me “ground only” insurance. Only liability.

More than have radials, but will be interested in what the insurance company tells you.

Yes, maybe more, but yours is cooler !!

I’ll go over the Facebook Yamaha forms and see if I can’t get a count that are flying. I’ll report that, and of course I’ll report when I find out from my insurer.

This was the same information avemco (who has the policy for the 170 we fly) gave my dad and I when we mentioned a Yamaha. If we go with a rotax it’s 10 hrs and and 10 landings. When I talked with falcon the guy I spoke with there said he wouldn’t be able to find a company to write a policy on a Highlander with a Yamaha. We were leaning towards the Yamaha for power but this might have us rethinking our options.

It is certainly discouraging, but a little late for me to change my mind. Even the more “mainstream” engines I could have chosen, or rather would have chosen, are far and few between on highlanders.

I guess I need to do two things:

1. Be REALLY careful
2. Fly the first 100 hours off really fast

I just got quoted annual premium of $4384 for my new Highlander with Yamaha Apex through Northwest Insurance Group, Inc.

During flight testing period, they only cover 10% insured hull value. I am a low hour pilot 300 hours TT and 17 hours tailwheel.
