Yep, need some advice on the Rotax again

Post by scubarider2 »

Been having some issues starting the engine. No matter what the weather if I put the heater to it for about 30 minutes it cranks right up. If I go somewhere and let it sit for a few hours or so then try and start it, I have problems. The battery is at 100%. Tells me if the oil is hot then the prop turns faster and starts easier. A friend with the same engine says it is the "sprag clutch" and that I need a new one and add the soft start module. Did Rotax come out with a new module that just plugs in and helps with starting? Otherwise I am going to have to wire up something with the "soft-start" module from Billy Hawk. Any ideas on the clutch issue? It is gradually getting worse. Now am afraid to take it somewhere in case it does not start trying to get home. The engine only has 385 hours. It is a Rotax 912uls swinging a Warp 72in 3-blade. Any advice or help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Dennis

Dennis,
The newer engines (past 2-3 years) come standard with the soft start module. Not sure if you can purchase from Rotax but many people install the Bully Hawk model.

Sorry I can't help you with the Sprag clutch, I know the clutch does not like 100LL fuel, not sure what you are burning.

Currently only burning non-ethanol fuel. Have not used 100LL in over a year.

Dennis,

You could have bad ignition modules i.e. one may not be working at all and the other intermittent. You can buy new ignition modules with soft start from your favorite Rotax dealer. I know Lockwood can bench test the modules and tell you if they are bad. I had the same problem with my 912ULS, I replaced the modules and good to go. If you do a search on Rotax Owners there are a number of threads related to ignition module failure.

Hope this helps. Let us know what you find out.

Dennis,
100 Hp?

There are many things that happen really fast when you are
flying an airplane. There is no sense in rushing any of the others.

I would much rather be looking down at the runway, than up at it.

I was just wondering because
of the higher compression of
the 100 horse engines...
