Exhaust tail pipe on 914

Post by Familyflyer »

I am curious as to how the tail pipe is holding up for everyone using the rivet and hose clamp method? I have just done this but is seam like it will not be very reliable. The pipe is not clamped solid which I am sure is a good thing, but hose clamps that could likely fail even if safety'd does not appeal to me. It will definitely move around from all the vibration. There must be something better. Any better ideas?

I use that clamp plus I cut 3 sllits in the pipe opposite the splts on the muffller outlet and then add another clamp there. Whatever you do DON'T weld it on. It will break off if you do.

I was thinking slits to help it seat better. I know not to weld it. I will try that. What was the cause of your tail pipe coming off on your Alaska trip?

It went inside the muffler outlet which even though it has slits it is too stiff to squeeze down. I had a stainless rivet with a couple clamps but nothing like the 1/4" peg-clamp.

Troy,

Call the factory and ask Jak who makes the factory exhaust. I didn't get any clamps with my exhaust, so I contacted the guy directly and he shipped them to me. I dont know what they cost, cause mine were part of the exhaust package. But Im sure he'd sell you a couple of the 1/4" tab clamps. I looked for the guys contact info, but couldn't find it, and I don't remember his name. Perhaps someone one here knows who makes them for the factory...
Best,
