Cowling Chafe Seal

Post by Tralika »

I know that amateur built aircraft are supposed to be for education and research but I'm really getting tired of so much education. I finished installing my cowling and now that it's painted I was going to install the chafe seal. It turns out that I should have attached the chafe seal before fitting and installing the cowling. Now that the cowling is done, the chafe seal prevents the cowling from fitting. I don't want to learn anything else, I just want this project to be done! Here's a photo with the cowling and no chafe seal.

You might be able to get by with just anti-chafe tape, not the fibrous cowl chafe seal they use on Cessnas. You may have to replace it every year or so, but beats the hell out of refitting/painting the cowl again.

I am referring to something like

I have some black tape made by 3M that I'm going to try. Thanks for the Teflon tape suggestion, I wasn't aware of that product. I'll use that if the black tape doesn't work or when it wears out. I'm going to use the chafe seal/tape where the trailing edge of the engine cowl overlaps the boot cowls and also where the boot cowls overlap the fabric covered airframe.

Mc Master-Carr sells all kinds of surface protection tape. I have a few different widths and thicknesses. Worked well for the areas you are trying to protect.
