Does anyone have a 2D drawing of the Highlander Airfoil they can upload? Just playing around with a web-based Fluid Dynamics Simulator and would like to use the Highlander wing shape.

I decided to trace a rib and aileron and transferred the coordinates into a normalized format used by many airfoil analysis programs.

Shouldn't there be another set of numbers for the under camber of the airfoil? I would think you would need both surfaces of the airfoil. Do you have the profile of the CUFF or did you approximate it. I always wanted a profile of the Highlander rib. JoeB

The data given starts at the back of the airfoil (1,0) progresses along the top to the front of the airfoil (0,0) and then progresses along the bottom of the airfoil to rear of the airfoil (1, 0). So the whole airfoil is given in the files. This is the standard format for inputting into the many airfoil analysis tools. I think the data needs a little "tweaking" to make it fully compliant with the tools, but it is a good start.

The leading edge "cuff" is a best guess based on the following picture from Steve Henry's website....

I have some information related to the Highlander airfoil but it was generated from the original Avid airfoil. This was information I found from an article by Harry Riblatt. He spent some time working with the Avid airfoil and he published some numbers to generate several air foils based on the Avid airfoil. He used marked off stations along a chord and then had related upper and lower numbers (positive and negative) to generate the airfoil. That is why I was looking for upper and lower numbers on your posts. I drafted several of these airfoils in AutoCAD which isn't the best tool for generating the curves but it seemed to work OK. Harry also posted a set of stations specifically for a 45 inch chord. I can share those numbers if you would like. Joe B

I have a wing / rib design tool if you can send me the correct rib type and cord length I could plot one out. I’ll look up the Harry Riblett on the tool to see if it is one of the airfoils in the tool.

From past discussions, The Highlander is "supposed" to be close to a Riblett GA-30-610.5 shape. That shape was not listed in Riblett's "GA AIRFOILS" book I picked up from the EAA. That was my main motivation for tracing the full size rib and Aileron onto poster board and then transfer that to MS Excel. From there I've been playing around with rotating, scaling the full size data to get it into the more standard formats.

The article I have was discussing work Harry was doing for an Avid guy that was trying to modify his wing to accommodate a larger engine. Harry is laying a GA-35-614 x 45" airfoil over the Avid air foil to show where to modify the Avid airfoil to move the CG forward to help with the heavier engine and resolve some loss of boundary layer contact on the bottom of the wing due to the under camber. The Avid flyer was going to fill in and build up the leading edge over the finished wing to try and meet his goals. If you PM me with your E-Mail I can send you PDF's of the documents. I plotted the 45 inch chord coordinates in AutoCAD. It looked fairly good based on the images that were presented in the article. There are other coordinates but I don't know what or how they are used. Let me know if you want these. It's not a problem. JoeB

FYI, Here are some screenshots of the the tool. I could not find a GA-35-614 x 45" airfoil, I used a G35UA412 airfoil to generate this. In the interest of time, I couldn't remember how I did Screen Captures on my windows based machine so I took some photo's. Then my danged phone didn't want to send the e-Mails. Anyway . . . .
I found that you can enter the coordinates to create a airfoil layout. The software will print out with fiducial alignment marks so you can cut and tape the templates together accurately. The software package is Compufoil, http://www.compufoil.com/index.shtml. Entering all of the data points would be too much of a task for me to take on right now. I would recommend buying the Software. you could modle everything including the leading edge cuff that Steve Henry added to his Highlanders. The entire package cost about $150. the Base Program is $39.00. There is also a Modification Module that cost a whopping $15. Modification - The modification module include functionality to change: camber, thickness, max thick location, max camber position, combine airfoils, replace thickness profile, mirror surface, edit coordinates, reflex modification wizard, trailing edge flare wizard, full screen airfoil editor (CAD type functionality).
