Re: Superstol Must Haves and Could do without
So who else has STOL fences ? - to prevent spanwise dissipation of prop wash/ lift from the flaps.
I see Steve Henry has them on his latest plane.
Any good or bad experience?

Must haves:
Flying Tail
Baggage Compartment Door
Garmin G5 versus Steam Gauges. That is one of the better options effectively a full six pack of gauges, and weight is about the same as a regular Airspeed.

Are the Matcos lighter?...if so how much lighter?RAGS wrote:Just curious what makes the Beringer brakes better? aren't they both double calipers? The Matco's look lighter. They are a lot more money. Just curious.

On Yee Haw 7 I think Steve switched back to Matco dual brakes.Clark in AZ wrote:I opted for them on my build. Everyone I spoke with that has flown with them said they are much better than the Matcos. No specifics given other than greater stopping power. Maybe some that have them and can speak directly to the "betterness" of them, will chime in...

At one time I had both the Matco and Beringers in my shop. I weighed everything. It depends upon specific installation, but my best guess was that the Beringers are 1 pound lighter when the whole installation is considered.CanadianSheepHunter wrote:Are the Matcos lighter?...if so how much lighter?

Steve said he uses the dual-caliper Matco brakes, specifies 1/8" brake lines and fittings, and specifies master cylinders with intensifiers (installed by Matco).BucF16 wrote: On Yee Haw 7 I think Steve switched back to Matco dual brakes.
All of these can be added as upgrades in your kit order, and they're relatively inexpensive.
If you already have your kit and you got the standard 1/4" brake system, you can call Matco and order 1/8" lines and fittings, and ship your master cylinders back to Matco to have the intensifiers installed. This costs more, because your 1/4" stuff is now surplus, and you pay two-way shipping to get the intensifiers added.
Either way is still far less expensive than the Beringer system, and Steve says it performs just as well.

VGs are a must - but I bought my own
Delux interior weighs too much
Beringer brakes and wheels are awesome! But expensive!
Airfoil tail is a must
Rear bagage door- Yes - unless your arms are 3’ long
Tundra lite tail wheel - a must
Oil door - of course
First rule of STOL
If it doesnt add performance or utility - it weighs too much
The tanks are aluminum now
Rear baggage door is there a kit for that...or do it yourself ?
Do you have a pic of the Tundra lite tailwheel ?

The search function works very well on this forum. I typed in Tundra lite and the above was one of the choices that came up. there is also a thread about baggage doors that is still in the front page. As for mine I went to the Lowes aircraft parts store down the read and purchased 1/2 inch U channel and and Hysoled 2 pieces between the top longhorn and the side former. Added some piano hinge, .032 AL sheet and 2 wing camlock fasteners, and called it a day. The other does on the door thread are much more refined. I'l too ADD
Cheers,
Bruce

The best way to check out Jim Pekola's Tundra Tailwheels is to go to his website: http://www.tundratailwheel.com/CanadianSheepHunter wrote:Do you have a pic of the Tundra lite tailwheel ?
You can get Pekola Tailwheels from Just Aircraft, either with your kit, or afterward.

I have one its a 10"....didn't realize the name...it came with my used kit, apparently they don't make the 10" anymore, they make two sizes both which are smaller than mine...I heard perhaps the 10" is overkill, and extra unnecessary weight?...anyone run the 10" before on a Superstol that could chime in about pros and cons of 10" vs small Tundra tailwheel...I barely started building my SS

Re: Superstol Must Haves and Could do without
My 2 cents for what it's worth. I'd definitely go with Beringer brakes, I've have the matcos on my SS and I've flown a SS with the Beringer's and they're in my opinion a much better feeling brake. I'd put an 11" Matco tailwheel on my next one. The baggage door is an absolute must have. I'm sure everyone has their idea of what they want, those are some of mine.
