I have the EAA flight test manual and cards. They are kind of “one-size fits all” and cover FAR more complex aircraft, but you just cull out the parts that don’t apply.

Hi Shawn, I'm using the EAA cards as well. I have volunteered to collect data on how many hours it takes to complete the cards applicable to the Highlander. EAA has appealed to the FAA to use the cards in leu of the 40 hours. I also applied for the exemption for the "Additional Pilot Program"; which means I can have an additional pilot during my 40 hours to collect the data for the cards.

Cheers,
Bruce

Hey Bruce, did you actually get the exemption for the additional pilot or have you just applied?

Shawn,
AC 90-89B is an Advisory Circular on Flight Testing Amateur Built Aircraft. I suggest you download a copy and take a look at it. The Just aircraft are proven designs but it's still a good idea to test fly the plane to confirm there are no unstable characteristics and to establish performance data. The EAA test flight cards are something that came out recently and I have not seen them. I made up my own 40 flight test schedule based on the recommendations in the Advisory Circular that I'd be glad to share with you. Basically you want to explore the plane's performance in gradual stages. You start with the plane loaded light with a forward CG, then repeat everything at gross weight with the CG at the aft limit. I made all of the flights one hour. Most of the time the flight test took 10 or 15 minutes, the rest of each flight was just take off and landing practice or sight seeing to run out the 40 hour phase 1 requirement. I didn't find any unusual characteristics with my plane and I doubt you will with yours, but I think it's a good idea to be sure.

I feel like if you built a program off of the Advisory Circular you would come up with something similar to the EAA cards. They seem to have used that and expanded on it a bit. The test manual that comes with the cards refers to the AC quite a bit.

For information on the "Additional Pilot Program" Refer to AC 90-116. Paragraph1:

1. PURPOSE. This advisory circular (AC) provides information and guidance on the Additional Pilot Program (APP) for flight testing experimental aircraft. The APP was developed to improve safety by enhancing Builder/Owner Pilot (BP) skills and mitigate risks associated with Phase I flight testing of aircraft built from commercially produced kits through the use of a qualified additional pilot and powerplant testing. The APP is an optional program which provides another pathway to conducting Phase I flight testing.

In the AC there is a stipulation that states that your aircraft must be from an FAA approved kit (JustAircraft is!) AND the engine must be an approved list of engines by the Kit manufacturer. JustAircraft does not have such a list. (and won't) So I spoke to my FAA inspector and after some discussion with EAA and higher ups, it looks like come Wednesday I'll get the approval which will be in the form of the 8130-2J. I'll let you know.

Cheers,
Bruce

I didn’t know Just didn’t have an approved engine list, I just assumed the factory supported installations met that requirement. Because of that I assumed mine would not be approved.

Interesting that it seems like at least SOME common sense prevailed!
