(18) Spinner Kit ( Mike )

(18) Spinner Kit ( Mike )

Hey Guys,
Here's some details of my Spinner Kit , ordered from Aircraft Spruce... ( SN-2 )

At first the price was $150.... Which sounded a little High....

But I made up my mind to get it....

Crap , the price jumped to $206.....

Well.... I bought it anyway... I didn't find something better until "AFTER" I ordered it....

But , it was special order.... No Return....

Anywho ,
Moving on.... Finding how to cut out the holes for the prop was a little difficult...

A flat pattern was close.... but , tilting the pattern on the angle that would be traced on the spinner

changed the way the prop hole looked....

I ended up making a spinner "Mock up"...

I covered my spinner with thin plastic....

and made a batch of paper mache paste... Flour , water , salt

Torn some strips of news paper.... and gave it a light coat....

After it dried , I coated the outside with Elmers Glue.... That helped "Stiffen" it up more...

From there , I traced my pattern after I put lines on the Mock up....

Now , I have a MUCH BETTER idea about the "cut outs"....

I modified my pattern , until I thought it was close enough to transfer the cut outs onto the spinner....

After , I still need to trim the Aluminum more for the Final fit....

Towards the end , I had enough clearance to mount the "Back Plate"....

But after final assy. I'll do a final trim Minimum 1/8" clearance...

Gotta Fly...

Even though this "did" work for me....
If I ever do something like this again.... I Won't use paper Mach'e... It was a little too flimsy
and it took days to dry.... Instead , I'd cover the spinner like I did... and use a thin coat of Fiberglass cloth and resin...
This would hold the shape BETTER....

Hey Guys,
My Front Stabilizer is pretty simple... 1/16" 6061 aluminum disc , w/ nylon around it...

The nylon came off a "saw blade"... They ship them this way ( Large Blades )

It took a few tries , But I finally got a snug fit...

Here's pix

Hey Guys,
Finishing up this Spinner.
The SIDE shot on the rough spinner gives you an idea of the grooves...Never noticed how BIG they were I started to polish it...Oooops, Back up...sanding first.
The grooves were fairly deep... I started with 150 grit and a block sander...Cross sanding ...sort of a diamond....Using the grooves as a guide.

Then...Cross Scuffing with a heavy (Green) scuff pad...again the diamond ...each way attacking the groove 'tops' in an evenly balanced finish.

Then...Cross coat scuffing with a Fine (White) scuff pad.... Bla bla Diamond..... I also Chased Black with this...Spots that needed special attention(mostly at the base)
.
Oh...If you don't have a large bucket of Elbow Grease...Don't even START doing this...
.
But... Like most stages...After the thing does it's job like it's supposed to...What can I do to spruce it up...?
In this case , a simple shine took DAYZ...(it will touch-up easy)
I'll settle for a Pledge shine...It's duller , but bugs wipe off easy.
.
Since this is the End of this thread...
I'll mention what I have heard about Aluminum Spinners... they crack... I don't know...

What "I" did to try to avoid this.... round everything...No edges for a crack to start...everything smoothed out.
.
No news is good news...Otherwise...I'll B Bach
.
