(25) Baggage/Sleeping Area (Mike)

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,
Just about the time I think of another new idea...

I find out it's been done.... Figures....

Well , This will be the first "Buttercup" with a sleeping area...
.
A quick summary... The Baggage "Floor" is beefed up to hold my weight...

and it will "Hinge" in the rear.... It will lift in front in order to get "at" things

like Battery , solenoid...or Linkage inspection...
.
The rear of the Baggage Compartment , Is what is moved to the passenger

area to extend the baggage floor....

It makes a long area to catch a few Zzzzz's

Either for Cross Country... Or overnight Fly-ins
.
Gotta Fly...
.
In these pictures , I'm putting together Main frame...

Rear frame tube - 5/8" X .049 tube ( one piece 33-1/2" )

All the other tubing is 1/2" X .035
.

Note... Someone said that there is only room for ONE , Don't you have a Girlfriend ?
I said , if she goes... we'll get a motel....Don't YOU have a girlfriend ?

.
They are just laying in place for now....

Hey Guys,
Here's the Frames where you can see them...
.
First Picture,is how it's laid out for sleeping...
.
Second Picture , Is how things are when Flying...
.
Third Picture , Shows how the floor Hinges to get access below...
.
The aluminum skin will overlap these frames...

I need some cardboard to make Templates.
.
Gotta Fly...
.
PS I modified the little frame , Since more weight will be on it while
getting "in or out"....
I added another long 1/2" tube down the middle...

Hey Guys,
Here's the main floor to the Baggage Area...

It Hinges in the back , and can be removed...

The hinge holds it from lifting up or moving forward...

So when it is in the travel position , It's secure...

Hey Guys,
Here's a close up of the rear Hinges...
.
Another note , I put a reinforcing tube in the middle area...

The long tube was "Per Print".... but "my" modification to the Baggage Area

needed more support...

This little tube really added some strength...

Hey Guys,
Since this section will be getting a lot of weight sometimes...

I put a third tube down the length...

I spliced three pieces together... It's not critical.

It feels a lot better...

Hey Guys,
To mount the rear panel "in Place"

I thought about several ways to be able to remove it easy...

Since it won't be used TOO MUCH...

I decided to use castle nuts...

This will keep it secure during Flight...

and not too much of a hassle to take down...
.
Here's pix .... this looked like the easiest and lightest to mount it...

Mounting Rear Baggage Panel...
.
Too early to tell.... But the Aluminum skin from this panel,

Will form around the lower baggage floor...

It will secure the floor in the rear hinges...

But I think the floor will still hinge to a certain extent ...

We'll see....
Gotta Fly...
.
PS You might also notice the frame is in front of the seat belt attach point...

The Aluminum skin will be trimmed slightly for the straps...

The rest will be hidden...

This looks well thought out.
Is the sleeping floor at an angle so that in a taildragger's tail low attitude, the upper torso is high, pointing aft while the feet go into the passenger seat area?

Hi Dave,
Yes , it's a little high... At first , I pulled a string to see what I had

to do with the existing cross tube already in place... This seems reasonable...

It's better than my first Idea about squeezing my legs between the diagonal tubes...

I know at Baraboo Fly-in... There's some "up hill" to park on... that can be kept in mind...

Hey Guys,
I'm making the template for the floor in the Baggage area...

I still need to trim it slightly...

I need the skin "in place" before I fit the lower sleeping area...

Hey Guys,

I got the Aluminum skin cut....

It will need "slight" trimming , But I'll wait til I get it secured in place

with some counter sunk screws...
.
I secured it with three tabs on each tube ( 12 tabs )

I used my creeper to test it for laying down....

The skin buckled slightly , So I've added more tabs on the outside tubes....

I haven't tested that part yet...

If it still isn't strong enough... I'll add more 1/2" tubes....

When I was laying on it... I noticed the "Length" was plenty long...

It just needs to be stronger for sleeping and rolling over...

Because I "Don't" sleep laying perfectly still....
.

.
.
PS.... I finished countersinking the new holes...

I tested it and rolled over with the help of upper fuselage tubes...

The floor "bows" , but it seems to be strong enough.

Now , the Aluminum Bows evenly with the frame.

At this point... I'll work on the Trimming the Aluminum and bending the front lip

Hey Guys,
The outer edge of the frame needed more "tabs" to hold

the Aluminum skin while it "bowed" when laid on...

There was three tabs on each side... I added 4 more to each side

Now the skin follows the frame without buckling/ warping...

But still , the frame was bowing a little too much...

I added another 1/2" tube between the existing tubes ( 3 more )

Now the frame with me & "Jaz" and some baggage on it

should be plenty strong...

These pictures were taken so "I" could see the tubes bending...

After I looked at these , I added the remaining tubes...

Hey Guys,
I'm working on the piece that acts as the rear of the Baggage area...

"And" the lower part of the sleeping area when moved to the passenger seat area...

( Passenger seat is put on the pilot seat )

I already added the 1/2" tube "Before"....

I knew this piece was going to have extra weight on it...

Mainly because it's used to get "in & out"

I already have the Frame mounts in the Baggage area...

Now I'm getting the Aluminum skin in place...

The lower area will help keep the Baggage floor from coming

out of it's rear hinges ( Remember... it's removable )

I've trimmed the upper parts of the skin for Seat Belt strap clearance
.
After I have the "Rear Fit" done ....

I'll add pieces to the frame that will hold it in place for sleeping...

These added braces won't be visible when the panel is "Stowed"
.

Hey Guys,

I got the Aluminum skin put on.. I set it in place at the rear position...

That way I got a good fit against the Baggage floor...

The Baggage floor can be lifted with the rear panel in place....

But the rear panel needs to be removed to get the baggage floor out of it's hinges...

I put the panel in it's "Sleeping Position"... Then put some tubing pieces in place

to support it... and keep it in it's place...

Here's some pictures of the panel in both places...
