Nico Press Questions

Hey gang!
  I've not been able to work on my kit for
few months, but I'm back on it now.

I'm going to do my tail feather flying wires
next, so I borrowed a Nico Press tool from
my a guy in the local EAA chapter. This
has lead me to some questions.

I was expecting to be able to crimp
3 times on one ferrule, according to
what I read in a Bingelis book, but that's
not what I found with this tool. The crimp
opening that fits my ferrules is only .050"
narrower than the ferrules themselves.
Is this right?

Hey Johnny, welcome back, was wondering if you gave up on us.  
Your picture shows a nico that looks too distorted to me.  But, I am NO expert.  I used the the crimper that takes two bolts tightened at the same time.  It closes the holes around the cable equally tight with no distortion to the outside.  Just my penny worth.    :wink:

Nicopress Crimp

I did some research into crimpers for the 3/32 wire since I had an old Nicopress hand crimper that I used on the boat. Unfortunately my old crimper only went down to 1/8 cables, so I had to go buy a new one.
If you look at http://www.nicopress.com/C2.htm you can see the list of proper crimp tools and heads for 3/32 wire. It looks from your picture like your crimper is OK (the 64-CGMP head). The "G" is Nicopress designation for 3/32 wire.
I also found that if the tool is powerful enough, it has a die that squeezes the whole sleeve at once, if not, it has a narrow die that requires 2 or more crimps (like the whimpy one I bought). The effect is the same. I read Bingalis book, but it sounds like he is using a crimper die for 1/8 and greater wire(which seems to be standard for all aircraft except our light sport). The crimper head you have will crimp the smaller 3/32 wire sleeve with one pass.

& then find out they wouldn't pass muster with
the ABDAR...
