Wheel Pant Reference

Post by Johnny C! »

Sort of planning ahead for wheel pants.
Does anyone know of a wheel pants
reference book or web based site to
brush up on effectivness for different styles?

Someone told me that the cone type that
go behind the tire is just as effective as
the full enclosure type.

I have been intending to buy prefabs, but
I think I may try glassing some myself to
save some cash. I had always shy'd away
from glass work, but what little I have done
has been enjoyable, so I may give it a try
after some research.

Thanks again!

John
There are many things that happen really fast when you are
flying an airplane. There is no sense in rushing any of the others.

I would much rather be looking down at the runway, than up at it.

Guess everybody here is going pantless....

I'm planning on putting some on my plane. Besides cleaning up the airflow behind those huge tires, I'll be flying out of a grass strip and I really don't want a brown stripes on the underside of my white wings...

Aircraft Spruce sells some that look like they might work

They're $164. Not sure if that is each or for a pair. I was thinking of ordering one to check the fit and maybe using it for a mold :-)

I think they look great but I wasn't sure they would fit the 26" tire.  Also not sure since flying ou of a grass strip always.

my plan

I also plan on getting some wheel pants.  Will have to look at sizes etc.  How would the wheel pant work on the nose gear of an Escapade?  Maybe if a wheel pant would not work maybe just a fender of some type for the grass field.

The nose wheel pant is going to be
tricky, at best.

I was thinking the trailing pant, ala Sukoi,
but I don't see how to make one
like that for the nose wheel.  I'll have
study on that some more...

Mullins, That is $164 each...

Well I ordered the mf9 pants from Aircraft Spruce. the good news is they are $164 for a pair not each. The bad news is they are too small. They looked huge when I pulled them from the box. Man those tire are big! Doesn't look like anything else they have will work so it looks like I'll be trying my hand at fabricating them. There is a web site I found that does a nice job of describing how to do something like this...

RG,
I stand corrected on the pricing. For two it
sounds pretty good.

A good friend has installed pants on his Mustang II.
He bought a cut up pant from a friend, repaired
it & fab'd another one. He said with all the time
& sanding he had in his, $300 sounded great.

Are you using the 6.00 x 6's or are you doing
something larger for a Highlander? Just trying
to get an idea of sizing for my tires.

Thanks for the link.

I'm using the tires that came with the kit, 8.50x6. I thought about modifying the pants. Would be easier than starting from scratch but I think they are just a little too small.

RG,
Do you have a 6.00 x 6 to compare it to?

Thanks!

Just FYI, Wag Aero has a bunch of sizes of wheel pants.  I don't know how much you can see them online but their catalog shows quite a few.

Sorry John, the 8.50x6 are the only tires I've got..

Thanks for the tip Steve. I don't have one of their current catalogs so it sounds like I'll have to get one.
