inside surface sealing of fiberglass cowlings?

Post by Dave Krall CFII SEL SES »

Should the work and weight penalty be accepted and the inside surfaces be sealed with primer &/or paint or some other substance to help protect against microscopic water &/or humidity invasion that will freeze at altitude or on cold nights thereby gradually weakening the fiberglass mesh with micro-fractures?

Dave,
there really isn't any need to coat the fiberglass to make it moisture proof even though you may have a little surface freezing unless it's for looks.  The polyester resin which the cowling is made of won't be affected, unless it is frozen all the way thru and if you're flying in that kind of weather for that length of time you'll have bigger problems then frozen fiberglass.  :)
