Hey Guys,
I'm making my Full Swivel Tailwheel...

I started out with a Tailwheel and Tailspring I bought used... I didn't like the way it was... and I'd
rather have full swivel...

The shaft length I'm dealing with is 1-3/8" long.... ( or should I say Short )

One of the first things I had to do was go over the wheel... Bearings were dry , and a grease gun wouldn't fit.

                                                Gotta Fly...

Hey Guys,
Next I boxed in the frame work.... the tire is Hard rubber... So I was
able to put my cross bracing about an 1/8th inch from the wheel....

As the wheel "wears"... the clearance will increase.

Hey Guys,

I bought the Thrust Bearing for under $4 bucks.... The Bronze washer was $2.50

The material I used between them was 2-1/2" cold rolled "Pin Stock"

Hey Guys,

This part holds the 5/16" Ball bearing and Spring...

I'm gonna "shorten" this later... it's kind of long

Hey Guys,

It makes a difference how deep you drill the "Divot".... a shallow Divot needs a strong spring...

If the Divot is deeper.... a lighter spring can be used...  Remember , the bearing has to be able to pop out

of the hole/Divot...

                                 Gotta Fly...

PS  I ended up drilling mine deeper than this picture... ( Not much )

Full Swivel Tailwheel

Hey Guys,

Here's my Full Swivel Tailwheel.... So far , it works great !!!!!

at first it "Broke" too easy.... So , I drilled the Divot a pinch more , and then it was hard to break.....

I backed off some spring pressure.... Now it's "set" for Taxi Tests.... it's Hard to break by hand... ( That's Good )

It'll be better to test it "Like a Tailwheel" and ease into getting it to break loose..... Rather than it breaking too easy...

PS  I built this from pictures supplied by Duane and Gordon , on the Tailwind list.... But it's "My Version"

Tailwheel Steering "Dampener"

Postby planecrazzzy » Fri Jul 10, 2009 8:33 pm

Hey Guys,
I wasn't sure about this... So I asked some guys on the "Tailwind" site...

I got my response from Jim Clement...

I was wondering if the Tailwheel steering dampener was still needed with a Full Swivel Tailwheel....

Two reasons why I wondered about this...

One... Too much pressure/shock , and the tailwheel would just unlock for a second...

Two... I thought maybe it would be more "positive" to unlock the tailwheel with a solid control rod...

Anyway... Jim uses the Dampener with Full swivel... Good enough for me...

Here's the one I made... I still need to connect it to the Rudder control Horn...

                                        Gotta Fly...
                                                         Mike & "Jaz" in MN

PS... I'm posting the directions that I built "Mine" from....  also...it doesn't mention...

On the last weld ( see directions )... I "loaded" the springs... Maybe 3/4"... put some good pressure on them before I
Tacked the two tubes together...

I did add a washer on the inside tube, it pushes against the spring

One more Thing

Postby planecrazzzy » Fri Dec 31, 2010 9:41 pm

Hey Guys,
One more thing.... I noticed that some of the guys had a Tall  "Bolt" or whatever at the Tailwheel

control horn connection....  ( it would "hit" the tailspring )

This was to stop it from over camming and sweeping under the Tailspring....

I wasn't sure if "I" needed anything.... until I tried out my new Tailwheel Dampener....

and ... at right full rudder.... it would sweep under the tailspring before it would "break" ( unlock )

Here's my solution... I welded a "tab" on one side of my Clevis.... Now it touches the Control horn at right full rudder,

and stops where it's supposed to....and it's a "clean" look.......simple

                                               Gotta Fly...
