(12) Controls ( Mike )

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,
Already finding too many problems with the Prints in this area....

So... Earl sez in "Grey" areas... Refer to the Tailwind prints...

Lucky... "I" have a set....

Here's some views of areas that you'll need better understanding of.....

Be careful.... These might not fit YOUR need....

But they might HELP you...

Couple things right off the Bat...

The elev "Throw" is different....

These prints show what holds the 1" control tube in place...

And on the swivel joint ( Elev control Rod ) , This shows round tubing... Not Square...

And there's just more detail in EVERYTHING...

Well.... As always... I hope this helps you...

Getting Started

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,
This area takes some caution... I set up the Stab/Elev , and checked "Throw"... Mine was 3-5/8"
at the Elevator control horn....

One of the first things I made was the "arm" that the stick connects to....The BC print "Angle" doesn't work out for me.

I needed to lay it over more... this helped the clearance on the lower stick control....

I drew things out , and layed the parts on the drawing to check things before tacking...

Control Tube

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,
Here it shows a retainer ( not on the BC prints ) ... I put these on with the slightest clearance when
finished... I don't want slop... but I want free motion...

Bushing

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,
The Bushing wasn't real clear in the BC prints... Myself , I'm in between both prints...

I added little spacer tube "rings" to help keep the bushing centered in the tube during welding...

Here's "my" version...

Next Step

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,
Trying to get everything welded before putting the tube in place on the Fuselage.

Next I welded the "Trim arm" on the end of the control tube...

Then put the tube in position and welded the second half of the retaining ring...

Now the Control tube is locked into position...

Control Horn

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,
Next , I prepped the Aileron control horn.... Welded the top plate and drilled it...

Then tacked into postion... didn't like it... broke the tack , cleaned it up and re tacked it...

Much better.... lines up with the front of the stick better....

   Welded it...

stick

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,
Welded the stick onto the lower control assy... Left it long for now...

Also, I have a different reinforcing plate... Mine is a tube sleeve.... I made it a little tall

and welded the trim tab onto it...

Control Rod

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,
I'm working on the "Control rod" that is inside the "control Tube"

In front ( 1/2" tube)  I welded a bolt that screws into a Heim Bushing w/jam nut ( My Mod )

Special note.... If the Jam nut comes loose... This tube can rotate and UNSCREW !!!!!

I need to weld a tab onto the tube... That allows it to swivel , but not completely around...

I'm gonna hang a red tag on this until I fix it....  I'll know better when I find out the Aileron "Throw"

 On the rear swivel assy.
I made a slight change in the shape of the rear "ears".... More welding surface...

Also... When I welded the "end" retaining ring.... I left more room for welding... Then ground it to the
proper length...

elevator tube

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,
Moving back... Getting the Elevator tube attached to the Swivel linkage...

This is the bigger Front tube.... Flattened it a little , welded a 5/16" x .058 tube on it...

Then put a strap around it ( .063 )

Trim Assy

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,
As soon as I finished my Trim System.... I learned about the "Mod" the Tailwind guys use....

So I re worked it.... and made the Friction surface 2-1/4" .... This Helps....

Also.... The Prints call for a spring size at .049..... I bought .047 .....  Heard .054 was pretty close...

I'll be looking for springs again....

I made a "Wing Nut" for adjusting......  On the other side... I welded something close to a

"Flat" on the bolt... So it can't turn.....

I found that it still wants to "back -off".....  So... I put a nylock on the outside of the wing nut....

Now... I still have adjustment  "On the Fly" ( Tighter ).....

and if I need to... I can adjust the nylock tighter with a wrench....
.
.
I like the Trim System.... Seems to work pretty good...

. PS I ended up with .062 for spring dia X 2-3/4"
It seems to hold my large elevator surface just fine...

Flap Control Unit

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,
I'm making my Flap control unit...

Couple notes for these pictures...  I don't know why the holes were called out so big for a 1/4" bolt....

I would have made them a size smaller....

The Square tube that it calls out for.... wasn't on my material list ( Don't know why )

But I like this way better anyway....   .049 wall - Round tube

Also... I've heard that "Earl" sez the Flaps are hard to pull..... I made my handles 3 inches longer than stock...

Also the Base plate is wider than 1-1/8"
.
I have a hard Concrete Nail that I'll use for the "PIN" material

Locking Devise

Post by planecrazzzy »

Here's a couple views on the Locking devise....

I have the Concrete Nail down to size , and semi pointed....

In these views... you can see the slight welds I put on the Head of the nail to

help it with a tight fit....  Also... I used a piece of 5/16 X .058 tube , to hold the nail

"Centered" while I welded it.... Turned out perfect...
.
. What your seeing at the end of the tube is Silicone Bronze.....  At first... I made the piece to "print"

But the spring I found , didn't fit "inside"..... So I filled up the recess with Silicone Bronze... Then

Ground the outside .... Now my Spring fits "over" that stub

Splice

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,
Something I didn't like.... Was not being able to take the Flap Control apart.....

People have needed to repair the pin.....   Also... I just don't like to build like that....

So.... I've made a "Splice" in my adjusting Ring/Hoop.....

I did some quick figuring... and drew out the "Throw" of the Flaps  ( Max  35 degrees )

and that's where I figured I'd use the head of the Bolt as a "Stop".....

From there.... I "backed up" for the hole position....  Then I drilled a 3/16" hole.

The hoop was already "tacked" in place in front.....

I made a cut , and removed the back part of the hoop....

Then I ground half of the Front Tube....( Hole Area )

I ground into the rear tube.... and welded a piece of solid Chromemoly "Tab" on it....

This will "Match up" to the otherside....  I drilled and "Tapped" the solid Tab....

I bolted the assy together after fine tuning the fit....

Once it was together.... I tacked the back hoop.... Then Welded them Both completely...

and let cool......

I didn't want to Test it until it was solid.....

After.... I tried to get the Handle off..... it works.....

And the splice goes back together very good , no gap....

                       Gotta Fly...

Mounting the Unit

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,
I'll have to get back to this later....

A friend of mine was over yesterday  ( Kent - Building Tailwind )

And he noticed the interferance of the Linkage , between the Flap control rod , and the Aileron Horn...

I'm gonna get to work on the Aileron linkage to make sure I have Clearance when I mount

the Flap control unit....  The print is Vague in this area...

Here's a couple of pictures I took while checking Clearance with the Stick.... Looks good

Aileron Belcranks

Post by planecrazzzy »

Hey Guys,
I built the Aileron Bellcranks today... Their mounted on the Fuselage....
Once I get a little closer to finding the travel of the Ailerons , and how much the stick
needs to travel... I'll be able to clear it with the Flap control Tube....and go back to finishing
that assy.
