Advice on Bungee's

Post by jjacky »

Hi people. Spent last night trying several methods to wrap the Highlander bungees and finally realized I'd need two very big guys or a little brain power from you-all. How didja do it?! Thanks...bird

Bird,

What I did was to use a couple clamps and my wife. I would stretch the bungee as far as humanly possible then have the wife clamp it in position, relax a little then make the next wrap and have the wife clamp it. The clamps would keep the wrapped part of the bungee nice and tight while I regained some strength to make the next wrap. It took two clamps like these http://www.irwin.com/tools/clamps/sl300 ... -spreaders" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and a helpful wife to get the job done. Before I figured this out I cut a few fingers and cussed a whole lot trying to figure it out.

What I did was wrap it one time less than what it calls for....then....flew it over to Toccoa next and met Troy there. He looked at it and had me take the pressure off the tire by lifting the wing. He crawled under and wrapped it one more time each side with no help on his back. True story!

Troy and I both lay under the plane and wrap with our hands only Toys favorite saying is" Just put your purse down". I do have a tool at the factory thats much easier but its still fun to watch other people use it. Jak

2 nephews, oh, say 35 to 30 years old worked pretty well. Only problem was to get them off their phones long enough. Seriously, I DO NOT want to have to do this by myself at some remote location. I think I need to look for a bigger purse. The clamps sound like the best solution Yet, but that still takes 2 people.

I just replaced my bungees in January. My method:

1. Jack up and hang the a/c from the rafters in my shop so I can remove the bungee strut and do a good inspection of the gear.
2. remove one of the old bungees (amazing how easy it is!!)
3. place an old, disposable bolt through the end of the bungee strut and clamp it tightly in a vise.
4. remove one bungee
5. replace the bungee by stretching it to the max on each round.
6. when I got to the last two wraps I used a phillips screwdriver as a pulling aide
7. on the last wrap I used the screwdriver to assist in getting the loop over the 'ear' on the bungee strut
8. have a beer, rest, cuss.
9. repeat with the other bungee
10. put the strut back on the plane
11. have a beer, rest, cuss, etc....

I've attached a photo of the original version.

Kevin,

Sounds like a great way to do it. I think the secret now is to have 'em wrapped the first time. As you replace one of the bungees the other one holds things together. I remember trying to do the vise thing, but the round strut only rotated when I began putting rotational torque via the wrapping...I couldn't hold both parts of the strut at the same time.

I'm still not clear on the bolt thing, though. Might that be a picture worth a thousand words?

btw Cussing, etc. is not limited to bungees. Nor is the beer, though margaritas sneak into the picture quite often.

There are many things that happen really fast when you are
flying an airplane. There is no sense in rushing any of the others.

I would much rather be looking down at the runway, than up at it.

Ok we did bungie wraps today and here are some pictures. There not in order but the one shows how much I had left over when I got all thew wraps on. The side view shows how the ends are supposed to look and just for fun we let Lila try one. There is a picture of the fixture. We did try the clamp trick like reported here and it worked but clamp it on good and straight because its under tremindous pressure and just looked hookie to me. Hope this helps. Jak
