Yahoo group

Post by b1x4nqb »

Hello everyone,  I'm new to your forum and very glad to find this.  I created a yahoo group forum about 1 week ago hoping to find this type of crowd.  Everyone is welcome to join it and I spoke to Troy about joining in as well to help answer future questions.  I sent them invitations anyway.

In the meantime allow me to introduce myself.  I live in more or less, central Pennsylvania and I have been very interested in a folding wing STOl aircraft for a long time.  I was very interested in the Rocky mountain wings aircraft but after Oshkosh this year, I decided the Highlander was no comparison for what RMW had on display or to offer.  Unfortunatly, the cost is considerably higher also, so it comes with a price.  My wife actually liked the RMW RR3 on display more for looks but she said I should choose based on what will provide a more useable aircraft for me and one that I will be able to grow into and not out of.  For this reason, I am investing a bit more into this aircraft over the RMW line.  It is just bigger, more roomy, and has in my opinion a better usefullness all around.  Performance is slightly improved as well, according to a builder who has built both aircraft out in Washington State.  O.K., enough for the introduction.  I plan on ordering my kit in the next week or two.  Unfortunatly Troy said it won't be ready for pick up until Late September.  I look forward to many more conversations with all of you in the coming years.

Sean,

Maybe you misunderstood me.  I love forums and I did not know this one existed 1 week ago.  I never insinuated I do not like anything.  Don't feel threatened.  That is the one difficult thing about dealing with people over the internet.  They cannot really hear what you mean, only what THEY think you're saying.  I've done it myself.

I have been looking for a group on the internet for quite a while to share the building experience.  If you read my introduction in the yahoo group I created you will better understand.  Prior to that, I was building a Challenger and in the process found a "Yahoo" group for them that was invaluable!  Only knowing that type of group or forum if you will,  I searched for one for the Highlanders, the Just Aircraft, and finally found one specifically for the Escapades but it was a group from the UK.  I joined for several weeks but really wanted to meet people in the USA.  Finally I thought I might as well just start one of my own.  Maybe the Highlander just didn't have the following yet??  I know that groups of people sharing is of great help, especially when embarking on such a project of building an airplane.  It is for this reason that I stepped forth and tried to start one.  THEN, I found this group, joined, introduced myself and invited anyone wishing to join my group to do so as well.  I don't know much about how the "wings forum" works but I do know how a yahoo group works so I figured I would just keep both alive with myself and see how this group turns out.  If it is helpful I will continue to share.  If I see others join the yahoo group and it turns out to be of benefit as well, I'll be glad I helped more people join in on such a great way of communicating.  I look forward to getting to know more of you as time goes on.

Thanks,
Paul

No problem!  I was not insulted in the least.

I just always try to solicit feedback so I can make the forums better and more useful to all.
If another forum, list, or group is doing things better, I want to know about it so I can improve WingsForum.

Sean,

I think I now know why I like the yahoo groups a lot.  Since you inquired, maybe you can use it to improve this site??

1) All conversations are part of a string that is available to read.  I can get each one as they are posted or get a daily string of what took place for the day and these options are e-mailed to me so I don't need to log in to read them.  The third option is not to get the e-mails but to take the time to log in and read what I missed.  In this forums case (not complaining) I need to log in every time, then scroll down to the section I want (Just Aircraft) and then click on each subject and read only its contents.  I then need to log back into each subject to read what went on today.  With the other group I am a member of, I am subscribed to the daily digest which is essentially an e-mail to me each day and once I click on it, I read everything for the past 24hrs in one click.  Here is an example of the last e-mail I got.  One other option once I open the e-mail is to go to a specific post by clicking on the individual title at the beginning and that will take me to the place within the body of all the messages with that specific post.  Hope this is helpful.

Paul

Mike,

I am looking for 0~10psi for experimental purposes. I've decided to use a
salvaged motorcycle fuel pump and regulate it with a precision pwm power
supply.

I have some $30.00 Facet fuel pressure regulators in stock that fit in the
line for the fuel pumps. They regulate from 1-5 in .5 increments. If you
have the 2.5-4.5 pump, I really don't think it's needed.

The only time you should be using the electric pump is right before start-up
and then possibly for take-off if you desire. The pump should then be shut
off so that it can serve as an emergency backup.

How are you using the electric pump and why do you feel the need to add a
regulator?

Has anyone experimented with controlling input power to the Facet pump to
figure out how to reduce the output pressure?

I don't know what the pump mechanism is, so can't tell if reducing the
voltage or using a pwm power supply can effective control the pressure at
the output.

Any insight appreciated.

Mike,
For clarification of any that are not familiar with the Pitot Pal, the
installed device uses a plastic knob or button that sticks out a little
further than Mike Harrison's belly button. I have the fiberglass nose
cone with the Pitot Pal in the center.
The only difference I found on my plane with and without the pitot was
during the most extreme yaw angle during slips (45deg?). Without the
pitot tube it would read zero and with my pitot installed it still gives
a reading.
The measure that I was most interested in verifying was my IAS during
power off and on stalls etc with the tube removed. It was the same.
I'm not recommending that anyone fly without their pitot tube, but I now
know that I still get normal readings for most flying conditions even if
it is not installed in the knob. I had an auxilliary ASI during the
flight.

Has anyone tried using the pitot pal without the tube? Do you still
get good air speed readings? I have two different lengths of tubing
and I have not seen any difference in the readings, but I was
reluctant to try less than the recommended 4" - supposedly 4" puts the
pitot tube in "undisturbed" air. However, on the ground that 4" off
the nose is prone to a lot of disturbance! I've been planning to move
mine to front of the root tube at the top of the windshield. Saw two
Challengers at the Arlington Air Show that had this arrangement and it
sure makes sense.

Kurt,
I really appreciate that information! I will definitely cut my tube length back so that it is less likely to get broken off by accident. I often thought that the pitot pal by itself stuck out enough on the fiberglass nose to allow for good readings, but since I didn't have a back up ASI, I was always reluctant (chicken) to fly without the tube to test it. You're my hero :-) Thanks!

Dear Kurt,
There is a possible reason for the erroneous reading from the pitot. Please check the tubing for lint. I found some lint in my belly button and thought that might be responsible. ;-)

white-listed in my spam filter which means that all yahoogroups emails
should get through no problem.

Is anyone else noticing that you're not getting some emails?

Stress Marks or Corrosion?
Posted by: "Mike S." mstephens1@stx.rr.com   n4290s

Dear Guru's,

I've got some cancer building up under the paint on my lift strut,
where the jury strut bracket rivets to the strut. Specifically, it's
the rear lift strut, right wing, outboard jury strut attach bracket
(the one that's installed at a slight angle).

I say cancer, but it could be where stress has caused the paint to
begin detaching itself from the aluminum strut. In any case, it has me
very concerned. I plan on drilling out the rivets on the jury strut
bracket, and removing the paint to look at the bare metal.

Has anybody seen this before? Any suggestions???

Thanks,

Mike Stephens

Hard to say without seing it but my Guess is Paint detaching.
Still worth a look though.
You should take the bolt off the bracket and see if it has any play in it.
Was this paint done by DLA ? What about the rivets?
OK my official guess is slightly loose rivets cause the paint to "detach"
But hey thats just a guess!

The question is whether a proper primer was used originally on a cleaned surface in order for the paint to stick to the primed aluminum. If not, it could cause bubbles and separation of the paint from the surface in a similar fashion.

At one time I had the daily digest option on the forum.  It was largely unused.

The problem is that you end up having to wade through lots of posts of no relevance to what you are looking for and end up missing things.  Also people change the subject of the email and threads get broken.

Any topic you wish to watch on a forum can be subscribed to.  I'm working on a way to subscribe to an entire forum so you can choose to be notified of any new post in the forums you like.  In your case "Just Aircraft"

Let me see what I can come up with to make the forum more friendly to those who like the email lists...

In my introduction post I said:
http://www.WingsForum.com was created because the email based groups that many of our fellow homebuilders use just can't compete with the forum format for organization of topics, searching information already covered by a group, and relevancy of information presented. I can't tell you how many HOURS of my life have been wasted scrolling through off topic threads and information irrelevant to my search on Yahoo and MSN groups. Lets face it, if you are looking for info on your spar why should you need to scroll through 30 email post on firewalls 5 about rudders and 2 about nothing at all?
Maybe I can add some functions to make those who prefer the email list format more at home.  I'll work on it.
