print glue

Post by flying2nc »

Started by ordering sitka spruce cap strips from wicks( http://aircraftproducts.wicksaircraft.com ) instead of aircraft spruce ( http://www.aircraft-spruce.com ) because I have read in many places on the net that they have better quality capstrip stock, it took almost 2 months to be delivered but when it came it was flawless! We ordered 1/4" x 5/8"ths instead of the 1/4" by 1/2" which is what the print calls for because it was 4 cents cheaper on the foot?? wicks was running a special on 5/8"s and with a little math I figured it would be less than a 1/2 a pound per wing, and really would not change any over all dimensions. Next it was off to our local lumber yard where I purchased a straight knot free 2"x8" to glue the wing rib print onto. sanded it smooth with 320 grit, cut it in half because I used one half to glue the print too and half to make my cap-strip pre bend jig. there is a picture of the spray on adhesive that I purchased to glue the print to the board with and if I had it to do again I would use something else!!
it is re positional as advertised but it never really completely dried, I was constantly smoothing out the wrinkles & bubbles until I got the board drilled with my positioning pins, after which it didn't matter as much.

Another way of doing these types of patterns is to photocopy them and then use an iron set on high heat, the ink will transfer directly to the plywood in a reverse image.
