Hysol 9460

Post by mhcrowder »

I received two Hysol 9460 A/B in 300ml cartridges with my kit. What applicator gun have you used for dispensing the epoxy? Do I also need to buy mixing tips? The product is listed as being re-packaged by E.V. Roberts, if that helps.

Thanks!

Check out this thread: http://www.wingsforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=218&t=22467.

I mix and sometimes apply the epoxy with a "tapered offset spatula", Aircraft Spruce part number Part # 01-24915 http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/c ... kkey=40243.

I didn't see it mentioned in the linked thread,
but I mixed the 2 parts by size, eyeballed,
and then learned to let it set up for about
30 minutes, which kept it from being so
soupy. I found it much easier to keep it
neat for the application. But the good
thing is that it's mostly hidden once the
airframe is finished.

After re-reading the OP's comments,
I didn't have the mixer tube. Just a
couple of popsticks and a mixing pad.

There are many things that happen really fast when you are
flying an airplane. There is no sense in rushing any of the others.

I would much rather be looking down at the runway, than up at it.

Hysol needs to be applied in the first ten minutes after mixing, as it provides maximum adhesion. After this, the epoxy starts to cure and does not bond with the material. Always mix in small batches. It is mixed 50/50 by volume. I just used a tongue depressor stick or popsicle stick and mixed it on a small paper plate. After a bit, you get pretty good at amounts and the grey color is consistent between the batches.

Ok, Sounds like earlier, Just was delivering the Hysol in cans to customers. What was included in my kit was two cartridges of Hysol that use a dual plunger caulk gun style applicator. Since the guns are on the espensive side, I was wondering what others had bought. Yesterday I found a cheap gun on eBay that I'm going to try. We'll see how it works out.

I mixed up small batches in paper cups and put it into the corner of a plastic bag. Cut off the corner of the bag and then it dispensed nicely and everything was disposable. I would apply it immediately and wipe up excess. Then after 30 - 90 minutes, it kick over but still be soft and I would smooth it out with my finger.

Most of the two-part epoxies come in the dual-tube arrangement. That is just to ensure that is an identical amount of each component is dispensed. You still have to mix it manually. If there is such a thing as a "mixing tube", I am not aware of it. That would be handy....

A disposable static mixing tube is good where you're going to be doing a lot of gluing, because you get continuous mixing, plus the application tip, in a single part. Here's an illustration of the mechanism in the tube:
epoxy static mixer.jpg
The plastic mixing tube -- and all the partially-mixed Hysol in it -- is discarded after each use. On small jobs, you can end up discarding many times as much material as you use.

I have the same question. I called the manufacturer on the label and they said they would email the answer, but still NORDO. I used to use T-88 that had a gun mixer, like the post above, but the cartridges are different.

So if anyone has a source, or an idea on getting to hysol out of the tubes I'm all ears :D

I found the following gun on EBay for $17.60 shipped back in July. Seems to work well.

I bought this gun and the Just's Hysol cartridges fit if you trim off 1/2" off the cartridge. I ordered it on the 17th and they were delivered by noon on the 19th, via Fedex. Haven't used them yet but they are very heavy duty. Not at all like the Home Depot caulk guns.

I just bought a pneumatic gun on ebay for 40.00 just like the one we use at the factory. the deals are there you just have to look for them. Jak P.S. its much cheaper for us to get the glue in the cartridges and ship that way you will have less waste and its easier to store, that's the reason for the change.
