If you learn to use your feet and respect them, they all will work. some better than others, depending on the airplane, tail weight, rigging..........
but most of all the pilot
but most of all the pilot

I think you should mount the wings backwards and put a pusher prop on it.

Would that mean a taildragger would become a nosedragger?

Re: tail drager. fixed wheel, free swivel, or sterable
To respond to the original question...
I started out with the standard Matco steerable wheel, and at the time the narrow one was supplied with the kit. It worked well but when I saw the "new' wider Matco supplied with the newer kits I wanted one because it would be less likely to dig furrows in the field when it was wet. It was also steerable but I never could stop it from shimmying on hard surfaces and eventually went with Chris's "Outlander" free swivel. I was a bit apprehensive about the free swivel part at first but now I really like it. The first time I took it out on a hard surface I made several landings and on one I made a rather higher speed exit off the runway and found the plane rapidly tightening the turn. Fortunately I caught it in time and it turned into one of my favorite kind of lessons...the kind that doesn't cost anything. I filed that bit of information away and have no regrets and I'm very happy with the wheel.

I have Jim Pekola's tailwheels on both of our planes and am totally happy with them.
He had a new design, aluminum locking TW at Arlington that looked amazing! It is for HLDR's and if I was in the market for a TW I would for sure get one of them.
