Anyone had experience with Aveo's Landing Lights?

Post by Johnny C! »

With Lima Charlie hopefully getting
closer to being finished, thanks largely
going to Scotty B!, it's time for me to
start looking at lighting. I intend to add
a pair of Aveo Powereburst lights for
Nav, Strobe & Position, as well as
landing/recognition lights.

Has anyone used or been around these?

Thanks!

I would much rather be looking down at the runway, than up at it.

John,

I did use Aveo's Ultra Auroras for my wingtips. Received many compliments as to how bright they are and how they look. I
don't think what you are thinking about were available when I did mine, but I'm sure you'll like the Aveo products.

I'm including a pic of my wingtip. I did also install Aveo's landing/taxi light and it came out pretty well. I can get a pic to you if you want, or I can
reduce a pic from Oshkosh without as much detail.

I'll just say, I'm happy with mine.

Hey John,

I can not directly address your question, because I have not used them yet, I bought two of these lights for my SuperSTOL. I plan to put them on the cowling. One directed mostly down, the other more ahead. I will say, find out when they will be available, because I ordered and paid for mine at Oshkosh 2013, and finally got them at Oshkosh 2014. It was a calendar year to finally get them. They would give me a production date, and it would come and go, then they would lie to me again and nothing. I will say, that Rick Lindstrom (Aveo dealer I bought them from) was pretty good about it. It was a production problem over seas that was causing the grief. What I found out was that in 2013 when they introduced them, they didn't sell enough of them to make a production run, so they just kept pushing it off. Rick offered to refund my money multiple times, but I didn't want my money back, I wanted the lights. I finally told him in the middle of July just to bring them to OSH to avoid shipping them, and it turned out he had them direct shipped from the production facility (I think Chech Rep) directly to his hotel in Wisconsin. I saw him on Monday of Airventure and he told me they were waiting for him when he arrived at the hotel on Saturday.
Anyway, long story even longer, make sure they are available before you send off your money. Or contact Rick Lindstrom out in CA to see if the company has made more of them.
They are very nice, and I am excited to see how they work, but they are currently sitting in the box on my bench.
Best,
Ben Schneider

Precoupe,
I am going with the Aveo
Powerbursts for for Nav,
Position, and Strobe. $479
for a pair.

SF,
As for availabilty, I will order
them from AS, so I can verify
current inventory when I place
my order. I am planning to mount
landing lights to my front landing
gear mounts & fair in with the
rear mounts. I am in trike config
now. And from the description
in AS, it appears that each
light has taxi & landing light
patterns in each light module.
I suppose I will order one &
try it out, and order a second
one if needed.

Thanks for the input!

John

I bought some Aveos (not landing) from Howard of http://kestrel-air.com/. He was helpful and shipped promptly and prices were lower than Spruce.

Is there a brightness rating on those?

RB MINI white - XPE.jpeg
With regards to the Red Baron Mini strobe, the answer I got was:

here is the Candela polar diagram, FAA minimums are the Red Line, RedBaron Mini is the dark curved line

(see diagram)

Some excerpts from our email exchange include:

"The Aveo lights far exceed the minimal requirements of the FAA. (by a lot) "
"Our red lights are ridiculously bright [and] the white ones in theory are even a bit brighter."
"Even though the Aurora Ultra is not certified, it is 2.5 times brighter than a certified light is required to be!"

Dennis,
Is the Aveo landing/taxi light bright enough to
land a highlander with? Did you use one
or two? What model/name?

Thanks!

John,

My unit, I think, isn't available anymore. It was an AveoMaxx that I got from Spruce. The Installation Manual is 9900021, for what that is worth. I can't find any reference in Google or Spruce.

Are LEDs bright enough? I can't imagine that they aren't. They are listed at 2500 lumens, however that compares with other LEDs and halogens.

When I turned on the big center landing LED at Oshkosh, everyone was blown away. Then, it seemed the taxi (ring of LEDs) lights were even brighter. When I lit up both together, no one was unimpressed.

So, what I have, I'm very happy with, though I did have to make my own mounting brackets. I just don't think they make 'em anymore. Maybe a dealer knows what I have and how to get one. I have only the one in front of the nosegear, just in front of the rubber shock doughnuts. It was about $795, so some of the newer sound to be a little more realistic in this marketplace.

I'll take a pic when I go out to the plane the next time. The cowl is off right now.

Here's the information on AveoMaxx Hercules from the Aveo website: http://www.aveoengineering.com/index.ph ... x-hercules. It has links to tech data, installation manual, and photos.

... and here's the information and order link from Kestrel Air (factory rep): http://kestrel-air.com/collections/herc ... gwag-light. The site says the light is in stock unless we want the mounting bracket; that requires a factory order.

These Vega landing lights are the ones SuperFly bought. They seem to be an ideal form factor for us, but Aveo provides only barebones information on them.

The technical information page http://www.aveoengineering.com/index.ph ... ega-tl-tlr indicates that the Vega lights use only 40% as much power as the Hercules Maxx that preacoupe installed - 24W for a pair of the TLRs vs 61W for a single Hercules. I'd expect there's a reasonable correlation between power use and brightness. That page currently provides no data on light output or angular width of the beam pattern.

The installation information http://www.aveoengineering.com/images/V ... TL-TLR.pdf doesn't tell us anything about aiming, so it's pretty hard to design a mount without buying the lights and trying them out. :(

preacoupe showed that the Hercules works for nosewheel aircraft. But, for tailwheel aircraft, we probably need different aiming angles for landing and taxi configurations. I'd sure like to see more in-depth information on the Vegas.

Hi, guys,

Richard is so right about the light dispersion pattern and aiming necessary. Yeah, I do have a tricycle gear and that is certainly easier to adjust the light for taxiing and landing, whereas with the taildragger configuration, the two attitudes are quite different. Maybe that is why there are separate landing lights and taxi lights.

Now, on my unit, which is not the Aveo Maxx Hercules, there are separate landing/taxi lights in the same housing. To aim, they have adjustments with screws, but I haven't worried about it much as mine are to be seen rather than seeing during a night landing.

Aveo doesn't show any reference anymore to what I have. All I know is they produce 2500 lumens while drawing 2.2 amps landing and 2.9 for the taxi. I'll send some close up pics after I go out to the hangar tomorrow. I did have to make my brackets.
