Rotax 912iS Sport ?

Post by mhcrowder »

Anyone know of a Highlander or SuperStol with the new Rotax 912iS Sport engine? The new Sport torque curve looks interesting and the fuel savings are proving to be quite nice. Kitfox and RAN's guys are giving it good reviews.

I've sent an email to Just, but haven't heard anything back yet.

Frank Soltis, the Alaska dealer has the 912is in his Superstol. Not sure if he's upgraded to the sport version yet or not.

Good evening, recently I created a post on Fuel Injected Big Bore 912 with the same questions. It seems like Rotax only shows you data that favors the 912is sport. For example, on their site they compare the sport to the uls on a torque curve and a fuel consumption graph which the is outperforms the uls. On the torque curve the graph is expanded to make it look like their is a great disparity when in reality the two engines have a 5NM difference in torque at 5450 Rpm or 3.8%. They do not compare the is to the uls on their take off run graph, climb graph, or their Weight to Power ratio curve which leaves me wondering.
It seems like the 912is will weigh at least 20lbs more installed with all the necessary monitoring equipment.

I'm closely following the folks doing the Big Bore work as well.
It seems like you could buy a 912uls, install a big bore kit, install fuel injection, and be around 20+Lbs lighter with 110-115 hp with no warranty for $27,000+-

Will one of you guys with some experience with these engines chime in before we do something Experimental?

Thanks,
Scott

Anyone have any new news on using 912iS in the Just ? Anyone have any pictures of Frank Soltis' Highlander installation? The Dollar/Euro price is getting better allowing the iS engine to come down in price a lot.

I talked to the Rotax reps @ SnF2015. The 912iS is now between $21k and $22k.

For comparison, what's their price on the 912ULS?

I briefly stopped by the Rotax booth and asked the rep. about the difference in the price of the uls and the is. According to the rep, there is about 3500.00 difference between the two when you have them installed. The uls does not have an exaust system and other engine monitoring stuff that you might want. The is has all that stuff included in the price. I didn't hang around and study on what he said much as I am thinking more on the lines of the UL for my future kit. This may be "salesman BS" or may be fact. I don't know.

Does anyone know how much the price drop is in dollars compared to the old price? I'm going to use a 914 and I was going to wait as long as possible to buy the engine, but if the price drop is big maybe now is the time.
