Aileron Spoilers

Post by SuperFly »

Howdy gang!

I have the Aileron Spoilers installed in my right wing. (Just is calling them Interceptors) I got an early set, and have gotten the first one installed. I think the factory has been putting some in airplanes they are building, but I don't think many have made it out yet to home builders. (I may be wrong) At least I have not heard anything on here about anyone installing them.
Anyway, I posted some short videos and a few pictures on my website that can explain them much better than I can. They are reasonably easy to install, I had to call and talk to Brent only once to get them put in and operational.
If you are interested, I weighed the parts that make them up, and they add 3lbs 8.5oz per wing.

I have not yet done the left wing, as it is not currently on the wing rotator. I will get to that when I get some help in the shop. My 5 year old, though very willing, was not going to be reliable enough help moving the wings..

Ben
Thanks! For the update very helpful.
I am waiting on my Spoilers . I am working on the engine and avionics til they arrive.
Hope they will be worth the wait. It sounds like they will help a lot with low speed handling.
Thanks! Oren

I think I have the first flying, non-factory-owned example of the new spoilers. Later versions use aluminum tubing in lieu of the chrome moly I used.

Looks like your right Ed,

Yours looks to be the original version of the design. From the looks of it, I like the new design better, simply because mounting it to the spar after the leading edge is skinned looks like a heck of a challenge. The new design has aluminum rib doublers that hold the nylon bushings on which the shaft pivots. I have obviously never installed the style you have there in your picture, but I would certainly think the newer version is much easier to install. Good on ya for meeting the challenge!
You didn't happen to weigh your system before installing did you? Troy said the new version saved some weight, but I don't recall him saying how much. Not that it matters, just curious.

Hi Ben, the "next-gen" spoiler system is lighter for sure. I didn't weigh mine. I would hate to hazzard a guess. Perhaps the difference it's the difference between a holiday binge on turkey, gravy and cranberry sauce versus a nice salad for the pilot.

Agreed Ed.

I have tried to save weight in several areas of my build (and splurged in a few others). As most all builders know, lightness is expensive. I could actually save money, and weight by cutting out the bacon cheeseburgers...

...But man are they good. ;)
