Prince Prop Update

Post by levyland »

Giddy Everyone
I recently returned to NZ with a Prince 80 X 40 prop to compare with my 80 x 38 that I have been running for several months.

My engine is a stock 912ULS

I have been very happy with my 80 x38 however I wanted to check out the 80 X 40 to try and increase my cruise speed, without a significant reduction in takeoff performance.

So here are the stats:

80 x 38
Static pull 430 pounds
Static runup 5460 RPM
Cruise at 5500 RPM 78 knots GS 75KTS TAS

80 x 40
Static pull 424 pounds
Static runup 5470
Cruise at 5500 RPM 79 GS 77KTS TAS

Note: It was a rather bumpy windy afternoon so getting an exact cruise speed was impossible.

Takeoff roll was increased by about 15% ish difference which is not significant when you are talking about 50 meter roll.

This was with two 180 pound pilots and about 20 gallons of fuel on board.

Summation: Both props are excellent in terms of their construction etc.

Like everything in life their are compromises.

If you are looking for best takeoff go with the 80 X 38, but for a small increase in ground roll you will add a couple of knots in cruise with the 80 x 40.

Bottom line, either is an excellent choice.

Hope this helps

Cheers,

John

Thanks, John, I've been waiting for an update, I'm choosing a new prop for my H. That 80X38 sounds like what I'm looking for. If you tried the Catto, too, did you notice any difference in how smooth they are?

thanks, Gary

Hi GARY
Yep the Prince is far superior to the Catto. Go Prince for sure
