Stewarts Paint Issues

Post by 957DK »

I know this has been discussed before, but has anyone come up with a solution to the fabric bubbling up around the fuel filler? I used Stewarts glue, primer and top coat.
I sealed around the edges of the fabric at the fuel filler with any epoxy and hoped that would prevent the problem but it hasn't. Very frustrating :x .
Any suggestions as to how to correct this problem would be appreciated.
If any of you are considering using Stewarts system on your plane, contact me and I'd be glad to share my experience with you.
Thanks,

Dan,

The picture isn't the best but this is what I did to protect the Stewart Systems paint and fabric edge from fuel.

Dan,
I used Stewarts glue and Eco Fill primer but had a professional paint shop do the final coats. They sprayed a light primer over the Eco Fill before final paint. After speaking with Steve I decided to cut the fabric away from the filler cap 1". I did this after everything was filled and primed with Eco fill. After cutting the fabric away I carefully rubbed off all the glue from the composite tank and aluminum filler neck. When the paint shop primed it sealed the edge of the fabric and aluminum filler neck. My planes been flying since las July (75 hours) and so far no issues.

I painted the area with Jeffco fuel tank sealer. The Stewarts finish went up to the edge of the Jeffco. I didn't paint it, so I've got a gray, two inch circle of Jeffco sealant around the filler.

It's not as pretty as the other solutions, but it will prevent the blistering and would be easy to do on your finished airplane. It's more durable than paint, which is good for such a high impact area of the plane. The Jeffco sealer is expensive, but I think you could use a very thin layer of Hysol structural adhesive and it would be just as good.

I'm posting using a tablet right now
so I am limited on my posting capabilties.

A Tuff Jug helps limit fuel exposure to
that area. They work great if you need
to fuel your bird from jug.

I have 2 and I want 1 more.

There are many things that happen really fast when you are
flying an airplane. There is no sense in rushing any of the others.

I would much rather be looking down at the runway, than up at it.
