Need advice on aileron cable tension

Post by Chief »

Members, my three year Highlander build is at its end - ready to fly except for one issue I'm not sure about. The issue is aileron cable tension. When the stick is centered the cable is tight, but at full right or left deflection the cable behind my head will develop nearly a half inch slack.

I have read some slack and full deflection is normal for a Highlander. How much is acceptable? I've never seen cable tension slack in another plane.

Safety first. Need advice.

If it were me I'd get on the phone with Jak at the factory.

Thanks. Right now that's the plan. Have also talked to Billy Payne. I'm about 1.5 hours east of the factory (by Highlander) on a private grass strip. I may try to get someone to fly in for an evaluation, depending on the cost. Early next week I'll send Jak a short video. Just wondering how much slack others have experienced?

If any body has the June issue of kit planes, there is an article about exactly this, complete with math! I will try to run through the calculations and post what I come up with.

When Scott was helping me do the final
tweaks on Lima Charlie, he mentioned that
the slack on each end was normal, and I
have noticed that on a lot of other Just's,
as well. I believe it may be some built in
differential, or it could be maybe just a
slight variation in the actuator weldments.
But either way, Lima Charlie flies just
fine with it like that.

I would still talk to someone at the
factory.

There are many things that happen really fast when you are
flying an airplane. There is no sense in rushing any of the others.

I would much rather be looking down at the runway, than up at it.

Thanks all for your input. I'm hoping to have this resolved next weekend. I'll report on how it works out.
