Kids got there first Ride in the SuperSTOL

Post by Familyflyer »

Finally got the time and weather to get the kids in the plane. They had lots of fun. They said so many funny things and I had a hard time to cut it down to the long video it is.

I installed the new flap handle that has better leverage but that is about it. You need a better spring which I hope to find locally. I have to pull out the shaft every time with my finger which is a real pain. It takes the fun out of it. I oiled and greased it when I put it back together but that was not enough.

Also the flap need to be oiled frequently (LPS) as they keep binding and not fully retracting. One side does and the other doesn't so then the plane wants to roll. I then pull one notch of flap to fly. It levels them. I will have to talk to the factory to see if there is some kind of trick, oiling every 5 hours is not right to keep them working.

Got over 30hrs on it now. I sure hope I can get all components working more reliably soon.

Here is the Video.

Great video Troy. You've sure got a couple of cute kids! When I get back next week I'll send you a part number on the spring that I used to replace the very weak one that sits in the flap handle (don't know if it will help). Also, I have heard that some (maybe Steve Henry) have cut down the inner tube, leaving only the ends, connected by a rod. That way when the flap handle flexes, there is less to bind. And I talked to one guy who cut down his flap springs to make them stronger. I was also thinking that it might be worthwhile to weld a vertical piece the length of the tube to stiffen it.

Troy,

That is a great video! Seeing your kids enthusiasm has to make all that effort of building (and cost) worthwhile...

And that is one really good looking SuperStol too.

Troy,
Fun video. Looks like the kids had a great time. Everyone I've had up for a ride said the same thing as your daughter. Looking straight down takes a little getting used to.

There are many things that happen really fast when you are
flying an airplane. There is no sense in rushing any of the others.

I would much rather be looking down at the runway, than up at it.

I just changed the spring and the flap engages with a positive secure snap when you pull the lever at each notch. Chuck the supplied spring and get one with twice the strength. It is so much nicer to have the flaps lock on the first try.

Fantastic video. There's nothing like sharing the joy of flying with those we love the most. And your son is HILARIOUS. Well done.

I was able to take my son last Monday for the first time.

What a thrill to share flight with him.

I had him on the stick last Friday.

He wants to be an astronaut, so I have
to get him going!

Later!
