Fabric at the Firewall
Hey Guys....How did you attach the fabric on the sides to the firewall. Did-ja just overlap and glue?....Thanks...bird
Plan not to be the first at the scene of the accident!

Re: Fabric at the Firewall
On mine, I wrapped the fabric around the front tube on the fuselage, then installed the firewall over the top and sealed with fire proof caulk. I think it is pretty standard to leave the firewall off until after covering. I dont think you would want the fabric attached to the stainless.
My $0.02, but I'll let you have it on the house since its close to Christmas.

Re: Fabric at the Firewall
Like Superfly (Ben) said except I don't have the firewall on yet and don't plan on using fire proof caulk.

Re: Fabric at the Firewall
Yep, John is right on with no plan to seal with fire proof caulk. I over thought this part when I ordered caulk. The theory is sound, but the practicality of it, not so much. Its certainly not going to hurt anything, but off the shelf caulk would do exactly the same job.
If a fire were to develop, it will come out of the cowling, and right through the fabric immediately behind the firewall along the sides and bottom of the fuselage. Fire proof caulk will not make the difference...

Re: Fabric at the Firewall
Maybe "overthought" it regarding fire, but I think sealing (caulking) makes sense regarding carbon monoxide gases penetrating the gaps at the firewall? Or am I missing something? Just curious.

Re: Fabric at the Firewall
I didn't like the idea of fabric to the firewall, and needed to change the shape of the firewall to accommodate my engine installation so I built an aluminum boot-cowl/glareshield that covers from the firewall to the doors/instrument panel all the way around.

Beautiful. More pictures, please. Actually, that installation deserves its own separate thread.

Dane,
Really looking forward to seeing the cowl installed. Nothing beats a radial on the cool factor scale. Have you seen the guy who just hung one on his recently completed RV8
Looks like your doing beautiful work.

Re: Fabric at the Firewall
The cowl only covers from the firewall to behind the exhaust ring, no "speed ring."
I have seen quite a bit about the rv project, his fabrication skills are insane! Has it flown yet?

I don't think so, he got the Airworthiness certificate a few days ago. I've seen some taxi test footage, very mean sounding engine. I'm looking forward to seeing it at Oshkosh next summer.
