Flap to fuselage closeout for SS??
So I have seen a couple of threads on here about the closeout, or gap filler piece from the flap to the turtle deck on the Highlander making a performance gain.
Has anyone done this on the SS??
Was it worth the effort??
What was the Benefit?

Re: Flap to fuselage closeout for SS??
I have that started for my Trilander,
but it has been on the back burner
for a while.
I streamlined the trailing edges of
my mains before I covered them, and
made fairings for my tail dragger main
gear mounts. I have a few other things
planned, including wheel pants. I have
the plugs & brackets made for the mains,
but I still need to make the plug & brackets
for the nose wheel.
I posted a complete list of my intended mods,
some time back in one of the threads here.
Every little cleanup mod will add up
over the life of the aircraft.

There are many things that happen really fast when you are
flying an airplane. There is no sense in rushing any of the others.
I would much rather be looking down at the runway, than up at it.

I noticed that Robbie and Keith did not do it on their latest airplanes.

I did the close out when I built mine. I feel it looks way better but do not know the difference in performance.

Re: Flap to fuselage closeout for SS??
Thanks Troy!
that helps, very nice work.
Can you post some basic performance numbers with engine and prop size so that we can compare - and maybe make an assumption on performance gain??
I am more interested in Flap performance improvement or slow flight characteristics personally - but any numbers you have are good!
Stall speed? - partial flaps - full flaps?
cruise speed?
Thanks
Shawn

Re: Flap to fuselage closeout for SS??
I do not own the airplane any more, sold it and build this an CC EX2. I fly with the new owner often enough though so I will get some numbers...to long ago for me to remember numbers in detail. My memory is this. It has a Catto 84X41. Cruised 85mph. Slats popped out at 45 light and 50 heavy. I will get accurate stall numbers. Never did high power stalls up high as I think the airspeed would not read the number. Stick in your gut power off is did a high descent in the low 30s if I remember right.

Beautiful Cub Troy! Is it all that you hoped it would be? How does it compare to the SS?
Thanks,
Clark

I actually don't like slats. Sure you can get a really high AOA but then you can't see that log or big rock in front or the right-front of you when landing. I personally feel that a high AOA looks cool and slats makes a really safe airplane that will not spin but it stops there. Being able to see where you are going is a much bigger advantage when dealing with obstacles.

I agree with you completly
high angle of attack does not make a better landing
UNLESS
you can go significantly slower.
and see the rock on flyby then land short enough to miss it
but yes
landing blind is a problem
