Aileron/Flap Cables

Post by Ewalk02 »

Does anyone have any tips for me, I'm getting ready to run the aileron/flap cables which means I need to drill the holes in the wing ribs in the right locations.

They have a set of guides for each rib,
at the factory. It would be neat if they
were in the new manual.

Good Luck,

John
There are many things that happen really fast when you are
flying an airplane. There is no sense in rushing any of the others.

I would much rather be looking down at the runway, than up at it.

Call the factory. They can fax or e-mail you a pattern for the proper hole placement.

We had a set of paper templates with our Kit # 229. I'm sure the factory can send them to you.

I have the templates that came with the manual, I was just wondering how well they lined up. I guess I have noticed that some of the templates aren't perfect so I was a little worried.

After you drill the holes, glue in short lengths of teflon tubing. Any minor misalignment will now be almost frictionless.

Don't want to bring up an old topic, but I found something interesting about the templates for the aileron/flap cable guide holes.

After loading the manual provided on the provided CD (Microsoft Word format), I printed the templates and cut them out. The first indication that something was wrong was that some of the holes were not round and not all the templates were the same size, as they should be. I had an idea that something was definitely amiss when the templates just didn't fit correctly. I wondered if someone at Just had accidently re-sized the templates inside the Word Document before saving it to the CD provided. Sure enough. I copied the images from the manual and placed them into a simple graphics editor and printed them. ALL CAME OUT PERFECTLY SIZED.

So, if it time for you to drill your cable routing holes in the wing ribs, you might want to take steps to get the correctly sized templates. This is on the Highlander and can't speak for the SuperStol.

Thanks for the Heads-up! Do you have a suggestion on a graphics editor? I am just about to perform that task on my project.

Thanks in advance!

I used Paint.net (http://www.getpaint.net/index.html) but I'm sure other ones are out there.

I just right moused button on each image and copied them to the clipboard. Then opened Paint.net and copied to new image. When printing, make sure you turn off any scaling or "fit to paper" options.

I had the same problem, so I printed them to a PDF file that can be opened in any PDF reader.

Michael, you might check these and see if they match what worked for you.

NOTE: These templates have been updated and renamed. Please see "Highlander Wing Cable Guide Templates.pdf" later in this thread.

Richard, I just checked your templates against my templates. All I can say is that they are different. If I align the spar curves between the two, the holes line up. The main difference is in the template length, i.e. distance between the spar and trailing edge aluminum. I also notice that the font on the templates is completely different to what's on the my templates.

Thanks all! I'm on the road, but when I get home on Sunday, I'll try as you suggest.
Cheers,

I cleaned up the templates several years ago. The factory guys said the spar tube was the reference point, so that's what I used. I chose a more legible font for the numbers.

I will say that the template hole locations were dead-on for me. I was concerned but after I drilled them I stretched a string from one end to the other and it did not touch any of the ribs!

My holes in the ribs lined up perfectly. I did wonder later after I was done if it would have been better to run one long piece of tube the whole way though. Anyone try this? It certainly would make changing the cable later a breeze.
