Only Highlander is listed special LSA

Post by Damien1309 »

Hi there,

Can anyone tell me why only the highlander (and not the superstol) is listed as S-LSA on this FAA link https://www.faa.gov/aircraft/gen_av/lig ... ctory.xlsx

My understanding is that s-LSA is a factory built category that allows both rental and training in the aircraft. We are looking at the superstol for both rental and training.

Is the superstol available "factory built"?
Has anyone had any previous experience with factory buids?

Anything I else I am missing here?

Thanks
Damien

SLSA - Special Light Sport Aircraft - Must be built by the factory

ELSA - Experimental Light Sport Aircraft. There are two ways to get an ELSA. One purchase an SLSA, call your local DAR and convert it to an ELSA. The 2nd was is to puerchase a ELSA Kit from the manufacturer to build it exactly to the factory SLSA specifications.

In both of the above cases Just Aircraft does not offer an SLSA Factory Built so they can't offer an ELSA Kit.

Both the Highlander and the SuperSTOL can be built to meet Light Sport Aircraft. It will be registered as an Experimental Aircraft, the DAR will attest it meets Light Sport Requirements. It should come with a Pink Registration that it meets Light Sport Catagory: 1320 Lbs, 2 place, etc.

A SLSA does not have to be factory built, but it has to be built EXACTLY as the approved model, no modifications allowed.

You have described an E-LSA. S-LSA must be factory built.

As of today, Just does not offer an S-LSA SuperStol. Therefore and E-LSA variant is not available either.

Training and rental of a SuperSTOL may be possible if you get the local FISDO to sign off on a LODA (Letter of Deviation Authority).

I concur with Av8r3400.

An SLSA has to be built by the Factory.

An ELSA can be built at home but it must be equipped exactly like the Factory SLSAs. The Factory also has to a Kit specified as an ELSA Kit.

That is according to Brian & Carrol Carpenter at Rainbow Aviation, where I took Light Sport Repairman Certification Training so I could get certified as a LSRM-A.
