Mark , Grind ,Repeat

Finally... a nice fit on Both sides.

Next I need to lay-out the airfoil shape...
Hopefully shave some of the wood with the table saw.

Oh, can't forget to cut the slot for the brake lines...
I gotta find what I'm using first.

The lay-out was just freehand...
.
Some of the excess wood was cut off with my cheap table-saw
Because of odd tapered angles...
I went slow so I didn't ruin anything... came close.
Without a flat surface to saw more.
I was just glad I cut what I did.

I used a Die Grinder w/ a Quick connect and 3" rough sanding disc to shape things close.
After... There's no getting around a LOT of hand sanding...
.
This is only for the Fit-up for gluing to the Spring rod...
Then the airfoil shape needs to be looked at after the adhesive is dry...
and light bondo to shape up the wood before fiberglass sleeves.
.
Back to sanding

Hey Guys,

Ok... The some of the rough sanding is done.
Then I cut the clearance for the Brake line "sleeves" I'm inserting...
Remember replacing the HS Leading edges...? They are being re-used

I put Bondo on the backside of the Chromoly sleeve and set them in place.
I put some steel plates on each end to hold them...
I found out later that the weight bowed the tubes ( slightly )
But as an added torsion bar...It works "for" me.

Hey Guys,

What time is it... I can't find my watch......
.
After the glue session that holds everything in place.
I crammed Bondo in the tube area...with a stick/putty knife
After ... To clean things up and leave a smooth finish ,
while it's soft... I wipe it with Lacquer Thinner.
.
.
Now I need to size it up... I need to rough shape both ends before the Windshield Adhesive...

Hey Guys,

Ok... Before I got things all gooped up...

I went over the procedure and laid out the stuff I needed.
I marked the angle , Marked the match up across the wood , and used a shim at the gear mount.
The cardboard corner protectors worked good.
and the stretch wrap worked in places hard to reach.

The straps were used in an odd fashion....and worked great bypassing the hooks
.
The Fuselage was set-up with the datum line level...
i did my best setting the dampeners straight into the wind.

I'll open my Present tomorrow...

Hey Guys,

i had to double check the cowling clearance.
The gap/space looks good to me...
.
Looks like Fairing work later , but close enough for now
Sounds like a chapter all it's own.(Fairings)

Here's a couple pictures showing the set-up for shaping the Dampeners.
The Portable Vise holds the Spring Rod ( With a Rag )http://www.wingsforum.com/viewforum.php?f=325
I can rotate it and adjust the tension by squeezing the rag , fat rag....
The light I've been using also helps... I rotate and watch the shadow.
.
A dimension that hasn't been mentioned... The taper of the Dampener / To match the Ratio Formula...
With the Rasp File i was able to Cut it away fairly easy...More of a PULLING action holding the rasp file backwards
Long strokes were working like a plane
I'm not liking power tools at this stage...
File or Sanding block...Back and forth with both helps "true it up" faster...
( And the Shadows )

Time for a little Bondo...
I don't want it everywhere, a little tape worked great.

.
PS It was helpful to wait on the Bondo til now...
As I was pulling the taper with the rasp file,
I could tell how far away the Spring Rod was,
and how much wood to shave.

Hey Guys,
.
First , I experimented with my OLD "West System" Epoxy
The Resin 105 looked clear...perfect
The Hardener 205 was a much darker Orange than normal.
Hmmm, i have almost a full quart , i could use it on the sleeves.

I glued two of the Balsa filler I'm using and looked at it the next morning.
I broke test pieces I made... The epoxy seems good enough for this application.
.
After I tested it... I used Bondo to glue the pieces... it's faster.. much faster

Here's some pictures so far.

Hey Guys,
I think this is all I can do until I order the Sleeves...
Now I have measurements... I can measure what I ended up with...ha !
.
I put the gear back on to see how it looks
Now I need to clean up after the flurry of tools

Hey Guys,
.
The more I starred at it... The more i didn't like the faring needed.

So I used some Balsa wood and a little Bondo.
To get an idea of the profile I needed... I just used toothpicks... Flat Ones
.
It's crude , but worked

Hey Guys,
I figured this was gonna be easier than paper patterns.
I just bonded the Balsa pieces with the toothpicks still in place.
After things were dry , I transferred the toothpick marks onto the wood,
and tried to draw the flowing line....

After the beginning fit-up and reinforcing for strength...
Some of the pieces were fit "In Place" with the gear bolted...
.
Mostly Wood... Bondo was only the adhesive... or slight filler.

Hey Guys,
.
After the final skim coat , This is pretty much how they look...

Now they are close enough to "TAPE" instead of a fairing....

and the Bolt can get a Box end wrench on it

Hey Guys,
.
Here's how it looks in Position...
It's close , if it moves , I don't think it'll move much.
The aluminum pieces it would touch have room and would flex. (or Dent)
