Yesterday, I completed the hinge interface sanding. I also started the Push Rod cover. I figured with the Honeycomb carbon fiber floor board, I would do it in the same material. I'm going to build one out of the old foam board I had build the first set of floor boards from, and cover it with the Honeycomb Carbon. However my long term plan is to use that as a Mold to build one that is just Carbon fiber.

Chris must be listen to Rock & Roll. He told me he is trying to get as much done before his daughter is born so he has time to help his wife & daughter. He wasn't joking! He has both wings built and ready for cables to be installed, and spoilers to be installed. I hope the Oratex arrive pretty soon.

Are you going to alodine the aluminum or just prime ?
Or both?
So the glue will stay stuck

Hey BDA, The new BAF manual says that they suggest using XIM 360 NT 100 Gray Primer by rustoleum. You are near them. Did they suggest this? and if so, does it need a conversion first? I've sent an email but no answer. I'm guessing they are on VaCa to get out of the cold.

Cheers,

Chromate conversion aka Alodine is what I would use. I’m not sure what Chris Wallen plans on using, I need to ask him. I’ve finished all of the Wing cuffs & hinge interfaces. I’m working on the hinge interface for the trim, one last piece to bond in place then I need to do the tape wraps to joint the parts, and finish. Then wait a week or two for the Wallen family.

Lars told me to alodine AND epoxy prime

Dont forget to get the backside where the fabric wraps around, inside penetrations etc.

*Edit* deleted

Disregard, I was asking about the series of aluminum but was able to zoom in and see it is 2024.

That being said, it is alclad which leads me to believe it will be fairly resistant to corrosion. As with most homebuilts, I suspect the plane will not live long enough for corrosion to be a factor...

I forgot about that that! I will need to relay that to Chris Wallen!

As I understand it - the prep and prime is more about how long the glue stays attached than corrosion.

If you have ever had the paint flake off of your aluminum cowling you know what I mean - don’t want the glue to do that.

I am pretty sure the scotch brite scuff THEN alodine would be enough for that - but, I have no actual proof of that.

I was just curious what you decided - I have to decide this week.

Just keep thinking about the mega-cool plane you will have when you're all done!

That is definitely true, but it's still feels like an never ending task! I think the flying tail will be a definite plus in the performance of the plane, but it has been a lot of hard work!

I get a reprieve on my schedule, seems as if Chris Wallen and his wife have a new member of their family. Chris asked if I give him a week.

Today I worked on the pilot side elevator, I was building the trim tab hinge interface. It is somewhat flimsy, I checked and there was adequate space to add anything in stone 1/8 inch foam, I glued In the piece of 1(8 inch closed cell foam and wrapped it with 1 layer of 6 ounce carbon fiber and put on peel ply. It should be cured by tomorrow morning hopefully everything will be fine. I cut all the carbon fiber to complete the three remaining tape wraps. After that I move onto finishing.

I completed the Rudder hinge interface, I started the Vertical Stabilizer hinge interface wrap tapes. Tha leaves 1 wrap tapes and the trim tab, and then on to finishing. I also need to complete the second air dam for the Horizontal Stab.
