Data Plate Installation
We are finishing up the fabric on our project and trying to get all the details correct. What location is everyone installing the required FAA data plate? On my last project, I installed it under the horizontal stabilizer. Do I need to worry about adding a fabric doubler at the installation location? And finally, how did you attach the data plate?

Re: Data Plate Installation
Funny, I'm working on the same thing. I'm putting the data plate under the handle on the left side of my SuperSTOL just forward of the HS. Yes, I have a fabric doubler plate for it as well.
Does Just Aircraft make a custom data plate or are you using a generic?

Re: Data Plate Installation
Haven't gotten the Data Plate yet. Was planning on ordering from Aircraft Spruce and having it engraved locally.

Re: Data Plate Installation
I swear there are 10 guys all at the same point in their build. I have seen so many perfectly timed threads recently, this one included.
I was going to glue an aluminum doubler to the inside of the fabric and then rivet the plate to that from outside.
I have the EAA certification pack, included a basic data plate, but it is the same one you can buy from spruce (EAA, three lines, really simple) and going to take it to a trophy shop to get it engraved.

Re: Data Plate Installation
I used the three line data plate from this company.

Builder: should be the name of the person that built the kit, not the name of the kit manufacturer.
I installed my plate on the left side below the horizontal stab with adhesive and rivets backed by the rivet washers that came with the kit. No fabric doubler but I'm sure it couldn't hurt.

Re: Data Plate Installation
Cool, was thinking about that this morning. I have the EAA pack as well. Below the left stab, where I have two Lexan plates so that I can see the tail wheel mechanism.
Cheers,
Bruce

Re: Data Plate Installation
I made an aluminum back plate with rolled edges and riveted through fabric as far forward as my chubby little arms could reach through the tail wheel hole.

Re: Data Plate Installation
Do most put it in at the rear so if the plane goes down hard there is hopefully the tail left for identification ?

Part 45.11: The aircraft identification plate must be secured to the aircraft fuselage exterior so that it is legible to a person on the ground, and must be either adjacent to and aft of the rearmost entrance door or on the fuselage surface near the tail surfaces

Re: Data Plate Installation
...I’ve never noticed a plate in the rear before, when I bought my Chinook it came below pilots seat.
