getting started on the wings

Post by KevinC »

I just went through this - it is not as bad as it seems.  Since you are in GA, the best advice I can give is take your digital camera (maybe the beer, too) to Walhalla and spend a day there.  It took me 3 times to get the 'order of business' down, but having the guys at the factory explain it and show you is worth a lot.  Second most valuable to me was to have a condensed task list - break the job into several little ones.  I have lots of notes and pix from the trip - send me a private message if you'd like them.

The book is a little more helpful with the wings.

Lift strut attach brackets, I-beams, tip braces, doublers, tanks, #1 ribs done and everything fits just fine to the fuselage.  I took the wings off last night and tonight starting on the control surfaces.

I'd really like to see your PIX & notes if they're emailable or easy for you. I'm just ready to start on the wings here in Seattle. My email: pilotdjk@yahoo.com

pictures

Hi Dave,  welcome to the site.  I have loads of pictures but they are all too big to download here.  Will have to shrink them.  Have been spending every waking moment on the plane {and the honey-do list}.  Needless to say, have not spent enough time on the "plane".
As soon as I get alittle time I will shrink the pictures and show them on here.  I have the almost everything but the wings complete.  Just got to cover.  Am doing that now.  Man, it takes alot of time...  Off to bed to go again tomorrow.

Notes & Pics Here?

Post by Johnny C! »

Hey gang!
Can we get your notes & pic's posted here?
I've got one tank & butt rib set done & I'm working
on the other side.
I, too have been to the factory, several times.
Those trips have made a big differance to me,
but notes & pic's from others would help with my
confidence, as well.

I think it would add a lot to the Just area here!
I haven't looked around too much, but this area
seems to have the most activity. It's been a
wonderful tool for me.

Keep it up!

Johnny C!
There are many things that happen really fast when you are
flying an airplane. There is no sense in rushing any of the others.

I would much rather be looking down at the runway, than up at it.

Hey Johnny!

Hey Johnny....sounds like you are ahead of me.... :?    All I have done on the wings is remove one rib from each wing because I got the larger fuel tanks and they fit it for the small ones.  I also got the wing tip braces on.  I went to the factory and took as many pics as I could.  I also talked to Troy who told me if he had the time he could have them built in 2 weeks.  *sigh*   It will probably take me two months.  I pretty much have everything done firewall back.  I even have the carpet in.  I will be covering the interior and putting up fabric this week.  After that will probably go ahead and cover the outside of the plane.  Then will tackle the wings.  I am trying to sell my ultralight so I can have the room to mount the wings to set the tanks etc.
Man, I gotta shrink my pics to show everyone.  See ya!

slow going

Post by Johnny C! »

I feel like I'm going so slow!
I just haven't been able to work
on it very much.
I just need to install the RH butt rib,
& install the upper & lower stringer, &
then I'm ready to cover the fuse. That
has gone by fast. The wings are going to
take more work.
Going to the factory has really taken
the concern out of a lot of the "problem
areas" that I was worried about.
Go to the factory every chance you
get. I will probably go next week again.
Post some wing building pics & notes
& get admin to thumb tack them at the top!

Keep it up!

I have my wings done. It took me 4 days, really isn't that bad. I have to put varnish on, string the cables and I'm ready for covering. I am going to get the plane ready for flight, do all the tests, make sure everthing works right then cover it. I learned that from my other plane I built. It's easier to fix the problems now than after it's covered! Just a thought.

4 days?

Post by scubarider »

Gary.....4 DAYS???
Man, what would it take to get you here in Cleveland, GA?.....
Thanks for the pictures.  They help alot.  Now, a step-by-step for dummies handbook would be fantastic  :D
If possible would love some more pictures if you have them and maybe some tips and tricks on the harder areas.
Thanks!!!
