That's not an oil leak, your plane is just marking it's spot. Congratulations.

Still no first flight. I have been spending all my time since my sign off catching up on years’ worth of neglected home and family. I need to tweak my idle mixture, but just have not been able to get to the airport to do it!

Anyway, here is the last time I ran it, the day before my inspection

https://youtu.be/MOPHAysATaI

The “surging” and subsequent uncommanded shutdown is due to my screwing with the idle mixture (incorrectly, DO THINGS IN ORDER!)

No need to rush the first flight. I received my airworthiness certificate in October, the weather had already turned so i didn't fly until the following spring. I waited until I had a nice day and no other commitments or distractions. Have you developed a flight test schedule?

Thanks, it is embarrassing how much other stuff I neglected the last year to get the plane done. I am playing a serious game of catch-up. The weather already sucks here, so not sure when I can fly between work, weather, and home.

Or put skis on it.

I am using the EAA flight test cards and handbook.

Quick update: last fall I got the AW certificate but did not fly for many reasons.

Catching up on household stuff
Hadn’t flown a taildragger in 15 years
Ignition problem
Carb setup issue

I have since fixed the ignition problem (bad module), figured my carb problem out (WAY off on my idle mixture setting, runs great as of this morning), got some sort of recent taildragger time (going to get an hour or so of MORE recent time), and generally caught up on stuff I was behind on.

Maine weather has become generally acceptable (it sucks 8 months out of the year).

I am out of town the next 3 weeks, but then I just need to cut open the oil filter and check for gear teeth that shouldn’t be there and give it a once over and I should be good to go.

Here’s hoping...

Dane,
Now that the forum is working, sort of, how about an update on the radial powered Highlander?

I don’t know if my reply went through. Long story short: only flew twice, started condition inspection, no time to fly as I am working non-stop to rathole money because I will likely lose my job (LET’S GO BRANDON!).

Weather here is cold as hell, so it might be a while. Unless I lose my job: silver lining is I’ll have lot’s of time.

Now, for the CG. I was at the extreme forward edge of the envelope last year. Let’s just say the flight characteristics were “undesirable.” The tail would lose authority before the wing stalled, which is an odd feeling in the flare. Three points were not really possible, couldn’t get the nose up if I slowed down at all. First landing was a bounce that I tried to go around from, but that is also where I learned my idle mixture was too lean and the engine quit when I applied throttle.

I thought I was going to total it. Fortunately my instinct on the bounce was to shove the nose down and try to establish a good landing attitude until power came up, and when power didn’t come up it just kind of plopped down gently. It just took a couple full control movements in about two seconds to make it work.

I added ballast over the winter and am just waiting for the grass to dry out so it’s not a mud pit on the runway. The new empty is at about 11” vs the 9” it was at. I’m probably going to throw 50-60 lbs in the baggage area too until I get comfortable with it.

Thanks for the update. Looking forward to hearing more flight characteristics with the CG change.
