Re: Highlander XL - Lycoming O-320
He. are the Installation Photo's for the Mounting Brackets for the Slats. I used the same Brackets they use to mount the Wing Cambane Stuts The are made for the 2 inch spar, welded steel. I didn't care for the Aluminum wing mount brackets that came with the kit. I bonded them to the Spar with Loctite Hysol Epoxy to the spars, and drilled and then riveted in place. I also installed the Leading Edge Cuff Steve Henry uses, some of the pictures showed how I cut and fit the Leading Edge fiberglass cuff around the brackets. We then used fillet to smother the transitions.

Re: Highlander XL - EPeX300Ti
Here are pictures of the During and After Covering of the wing with the Brackets sticking out. I also have different Brackets to Mount the Slats, I designed a couple of different Offset and drop from the leading edge & bottom of the wing spars.

Re: Highlander XL - Lycoming O-320
As much as the EPeX300Ti sounded like fun. I decided it didn’t meet my mission and I made the decision to go with a Lycoming O-320. I’m looking for a 150 or 160 HP.

Re: Highlander XL - Lycoming O-320
Just curious: was the “Highlander XL” a special order? I’ve seen SS XL stuff. Is the wing any longer than a standard highlander wing? What are you estimating the weight to be?

Same Wing, longer fuselage like SuperSTOL XL. According to Troy the weight will be approximately 17 pounds more for the extended fuselage tubing weight. Also according to Troy & Gary there are a few others out there.

Just wondering what the estimated all-up weight is with the bigger engine.
More of a wing-loading question.

Re: Highlander XL - Lycoming O-320
Rotax 220 lbs
Lycoming 244 lbs
So the Lycoming is 24 pounds heavier, plus 17 pounds for the extended fuselage. Guesstimate for slats 10 pounds, I’m guessing on that, but I’m betting it’s less probably closer to 5 pounds.
So if your calculation is correct for yours is 850.
850 + 17 XL + 24 LYCOMING + 5 to 10 pounds slats = 896 to 901 pounds. That’s my goal.

Re: Highlander XL - Lycoming O-320
The Rotec 7-cylinder I have is about 220 lbs. I had to add 15lbs of ballast in the tail. This brought me to a total empty weight of 852 lb and empty cg of 8.56”
With a 170lb pilot and half-fuel it’s at 1,118 lbs and 10.79”

Re: Highlander XL - Lycoming O-320
The extra 17 lbs for your fuselage length probably cancels out the 15 lbs of lead I have in the tail pretty well. I would have rather had a longer fuse than lead ingots.
Wish that was even an idea in 2011 when I bought my kit!

Re: Highlander XL - Lycoming O-320
So the Rotec and the Lycoming, with the XL I’ll have no ballast. Hell it might come in at 860 to 875. That beats the hell out of the SuperSTOL XL they usually weigh in at over 1000#. Easy for a EA Light Sport. I do have a dual Battery set up.

That is why I went with the XL, it was Troy’s & Gary’s idea. There are actually a couple of others out there. Also, I believe Steve Henry’s new plane is an XL.

Re: Highlander XL - Lycoming O-320
Looking at your Rotec 7-Cylinder weight 220 lbs, your making me think about going with the UL520 IS, the weight of the UL520IS is 108 kg = 238 lbs. 18 pounds heavier. So 852# + 18# = 870#. I could register it as a EA-LSA. I would be happy if it fell in under 900#.
